Briefly in the saddle today.

This day is a masked existence. There is no bad feeling that matches the type of pain, fear and worry you can feel as a parent. All is ok, just need to say that.

Summer, begone.

Slow burn in the hills. Z2, sweat, covered in dead flies, pulled a horsefly out of my leg at one point. Grotesque conditions but unbelievably quiet.

Perfect spin to the cafe and back. Kudos to the chap who rode with us for a bit. Sorry for dropping you on that climb. #cycling

How beautiful.

Foggy rogue.

Mindless hums to shit music and someone else’s smell. They just gave you another 3am worry and the waiting room was hell.

Issue 7 will be released on the 17th of July These themed issues have been such a rewarding experience to curate. This issue also marks two years of Underbelly Press. I feel very fortunate for all the connections the magazine has brought. Thank you for being here.

After three years riding this bike we realised that it’s miles too big for me with a stem that isn’t even the right stem for it. Yeah, my back is really loving that. So, new frame arrived today and J gets a day of bike building tomorrow. Nothing fancy or flash. Just the right size frame.

A road we ride captured on the train today. The old stone bridge, the river, the standing stone that sits alone in the field. It’s a perfect stretch to ride.

That was a good one. #cycling

Things of the heart.

Feels surreal to now be in the final stages, writing the final scenes that were there from the very beginning. #writing

Happy 90th birthday to my grandma. The lady who straightened my hair on the ironing board during the college days, shouted at boys, gave me a brandy, tamed my angst and told me it would all be ok in the end. Every era, every chapter, every story. Love.

Didn’t share any cycling shots while away so here’s one from our single ride in the north last week. We were camped out in a car park roughing it that day, should have stayed there. Wild trip, lots of trains, back up again later this year.

Walking out of a dream where the mood was off.

The instinctive reaction right now is lazy, sleep-walking cynicism, or sullen don't-give-me-hope despair. But the truth is: someone with very good communication skills, the right diagnosis and a reforming zeal is about to become prime minister. That seems pretty fucking encouraging to me.

Got around six handwritten pages about that weird place we stayed in this week. All scrawled beneath a tree in the thick of the heat, mostly incoherent. Think it adds to the very essence of that night tbh. Literally have a cottage phobia from it. #writing

This photo was a moment I will never forget.

Two hours sleep in a mouldy bed was a worthwhile price to pay for this day. Found everything we were looking for and more. Packed up & fled to the train station for a cuppa, the perfect ending to this trip. A plethora of writing material from last night too. Can’t wait to make that one into a story.

Right so, night two. This place is rough. Hot water on a limited window, questionable hair in all of the wrong places and if you’re seeing this I’m surprised it’s got through as the WiFi is featured but non existent. Leaving first thing tomorrow, wish us luck through this night. Over and out.

This house on the hill is beautiful, the church bells ring on the hour, the sun comes up over the hillside and the birds are singing. Can’t quite believe that after months of research my ancestry is here, in this gorgeous place, and not some repurposed industrial estate off the M6.
