I remember my grandmother applying bright coral red lipstick and jet black eyebrow pencil to face the world after her cancer diagnosis, like a mask, something Alfonsina also did in her last years. A mask, a potent tool for women to stoically endure incurable disease in twentieth century Argentina.

As a seven year old I was obsessed by her drowning in the waters of Mar del Plata because of a song that glorified her suicide as a trip down the ocean, an underwater playground. In 2024 I confronted that childhood illusion, walking Alfonsina’s final steps. #DaughtersoftheCurrent

Argentinian poet Alfonsina Storni threw herself in the waters of La Perla Beach, Mar del Plata in 1937 because the pain derived from her metastasized breast cancer was unbearable. Today, Argentinian scientists captured the creatures of those same waters for the 1st time. #DaughtersoftheCurrents
