In conversation with Lauren Oelkers: a community woven through hair
When people picture a hair salon, they often imagine rows of classic styling chairs, neutral colors, and shelves lined with hair products. But at Defiant Hair and Lonely Girl Vintage in Freehold, New Jersey, that familiar image is turned on its head. Equal parts salon and vintage boutique, the shop offers far more than a haircut. The space invites visitors into an environment where personal style and self-expression are all promoted and accepted.

REVIEW â Margot Millerâs EP âDowny Hair (Turns Into Stubble)â
Iâm a firm believer that seasons shouldnât be rushed. The hype for Halloween in July and the Christmas rush in November make me physically ill in a way that should be studied by the pumpkin spice latte enthusiasts. As much as I am stubborn in this and in more ways than one, I am open-minded. Thus, the only exception Iâve made for this rule in recent years is Margot Millerâs recent EP, …

REVIEW â e.lissa fadenâs âJust Mightâ is a grungy hello to Pride Month
In recent years, Pride Month has become more than just a half-assed and disregarded moniker for June, as queer individuals use the month to celebrate, honor, and revel in the beauty that is queer joy. Ignoring the disastrous attempts at corporate allyship (i.e., Targetâs visually offensive Pride collection), art flourishes during June as artists align with an inherently built-in, gathered community.Â

REVIEW â âGot it wrongâ by Claire Martine
On April 28, Claire Martine released her newest dreamy single, âGot it wrong.â Produced by Alejandro FlĂłrez and Liam Hartnett, "Got it wrong" uses wistful, lo-fi-pop-adjacent beats accompanied by beautiful bass and guitar playing to describe how hard it can be to express yourself at the right times. Lyrics like, "Sorry about last night / rolled your ankle / but Iâm the one who cried" encompass this idea perfectly, as Martine details how raw emotion that you're trying to keep down can come out at the wrong times, because of suppression.

Known for their poetic, though-provoking, and introspective lyrics, Mexican alternative rock band Enjambre released their ninth album, Daños Luz, on March 12. The contemporary R&B artist teamed up with producer and songwriter Nic Nac last summer for his sixth studio album, NO HArD FEELINGS, and delighted fans in February with the deluxe version. The 15-track album is noticeably short at just 32 minutes, teasing listeners with groovy one-to-two-minute songs. In conversation with Yawn Mower: ten years later
Ten years in, Yawn Mower hasnât drifted far from where it began. Rooted in New Jersey, the band has grown in size and sound, yet its foundation is still tied to the place that shaped it. âI personally would only want to be celebrating a ten-year anniversary with New Jersey,â explained frontman Mike Chick. âI donât know if I would rather be in any other state than this beautiful state.â

In conversation with Amanda Conti: the personal and professional pieces of songwriting
Of all things, it was an Instagram ad that brought the nonprofit RiverJAM Music to Amanda Contiâs attention. âI donât know how I saw ,â she explained. âAnd it was such funny timing because the night before, it just had a whole breakdown about the fact that I felt very disconnected from myself as a songwriter and a musician. I hadnât written in a while, and itâs a big part of my identity.

Kyra Soto's second single comes out on Friday, and we spoke with her about what it means to leave everything on the page when writing music. Read our conversation here:

In conversation with Kyra Soto: finding confidence in first drafts
Kyra Soto is no stranger to performing. Where some shy in front of the lens of a camera or the idea of being perceived, she thrives. âI grew up within the arts, and I've always just loved being in front of cameras.â She immediately recounts the Nickelodeon show iCarly, which served as the OG average-person-to-influencer pipe dream. âI loved that show and messing around in front of a camera, and always pretended to be making, like, iKyras⊠I think thatâs what introduced me .â Her parentsâ support was thus shown through Sotoâs mother making her audition for an arts middle school, an act that Soto at the time remained apprehensive about.

In conversation with Into Sunday: cultivating connection and finding meaning in the darknessÂ
Emo pop-punk band, Into Sunday, is not afraid of the dark. In fact, they embrace it. Founded in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania, the band has been making its mark on the local scene, exploring the gritty and emotional aspects of music since its members' early days attending Coughlin High School. Growing up, Into Sunday lead singer, Taylor Chronowski, and drummer, Matt Ceklosky, bonded over their mutual love of emo bands and alternative musicâspecifically, iconic pop-punk band Blink-182.

REVIEW â Mike Chickâs single âAtom Bombâ makes art out of the rubble
Fans of the Asbury Park music scene are no strangers to Yawn Mower. Their lo-fi indie sounds have performed all over Asbury and gained a growing fan base. Now, Mike Chick is preparing to release his newest LP, Congarts, on April 17. On March 20, Chick released âAtom Bomb,â the third single from the album. âAtom Bombâ follows Chickâs previous LP singles âTomorrow is a Blurâ and âCoronaâ and continues the album's anticipated vocal fun and hints at Chickâs Yawn Mower roots.Â

In conversation with Johnny Kasun: one guitar, endless possibilities
For many musicians, the guitar is just one piece of a larger band. For Johnny Kasun, it is the entire show. Through his use of fingerstyle guitar, Kasun creates the sound of multiple musicians at once, weaving melody, rhythm, and basslines together on a single instrument. When a guitar was placed in Kasunâs hand at nine years old, he originally did not see it as a passion, but rather something to do.

REVIEW â âHeart the Loverâ by Lily King
With no pun intended, I am a lover of Lily King. She is the ultimate indie literary darling, frequently appearing on the Indie Next List and loudly supporting independent booksellers; King provides a proud voice within the multifaceted community of indie writers. So, naturally, I needed my hands on Heart the Lover as quickly as possible, which I succeeded in. Immediately, I realized this book is a prequel and sequel to…

In conversation with Luke Brindley: living for the music
Music is second nature for Luke Brindley. From growing up in a music-centric family in North Jersey to studying the art in school, itâs almost as if music is the sun and Brindley lives in its orbit. âMy parents were amateur musicians,â Brindley explained, âand I played in a duo with my brother. Music, and especially live music, was always a part of who we were as a family growing up⊠Everything I've done since I was a kid has been focused around music in some way or another.â
