We welcome the announcement today in the draft Scottish Budget that Scottish Government are committed to raising the earnings threshold for Carer Support Payment and Carer’s Allowance to £196. This means carers in Scotland will be able to earn an extra £45 a week whilst receiving these benefits.

The Scottish Budget takes place on 4th December. Unpaid carers and local carer organisations are experiencing significant funding pressures alongside the rising cost of living. The National Carer Organisations are urging the Scottish Government to secure funding and support for unpaid carers.

We have received the draft Carer’s Assistance (Young Carer Grant and Carer Support Payment) (Miscellaneous Amendment and Saving Provision) (Scotland) Regulations 2025 from the Scottish Government and will now begin our scrutiny process.

The National Carer Organisations in Scotland have issued a joint statement expressing dismay at yet another delay to the National Care Service. Social care support is how many disabled people and unpaid carers are able to access some of their most basic human rights. It's an utter disgrace that councils continue to charge people to access essential care and support! #CarersCantWait

This was an SNP manifesto commitment. The Feeley Report recommended that these charges end - incompatible with human rights. The Scottish Govt voted to implement this recommendation. It wasn’t included in the National Care Service planning to enable charging to end sooner. Yet, nothing has changed.

In Scotland, people with support needs pay over £40 million every year in social care charges. This is putting many disabled people and their unpaid carers at risk of poverty. We are asking for an end to non residential social care charging in Scotland! #CarersCantWait
