In the art of the ancient world, the underwater world are sometimes depicted as a different reality, abstract and distant from our world. Artists without first-hand experience of the underwater world use artistic media to show aquatic environment in a range of formats.1/4

We had our suncream on for a scorching beach clean yesterday ☀️ It was awful to see all of the rubbish 😔 When you leave the beach, please take your rubbish with you or put it in one of the bins ♻️ Plastic cups, wrappers and cigarette butts don't disappear, they end up in the sea and harm wildlife 🦢🐬🦭🐟

The forecast is looking really promising for my trip to the Saltee Islands next week! 🤞 Due to my *slight* obsession with puffins it's become something of an annual tradition. It's such a wonderful place to spend time in nature.

Scan from an old stereo view of Waterford South railway station on June 4th, 1899. The station closed in 1906. During WW1 the site was used for a munitions factory which produced brass artillery shells. Waterford Iron Foundry was located on the site in later years.

Another old view of Waterford from a stereo-view dated July 4th, 1899. The building under construction was part of the Davis Strangman Brewery. In the distance is Waterford North railway station and Lemuel Cox's wooden bridge known locally as Timbertoes.

In traditional coastal fishing, whales were processed by hand on the beach, using simple tools like hatchets, knives and hooks. Etching from the Histoire générale des drogues, by Pierre Pomet, Paris 1694.
