Before TV was perfected, CBS wanted to show its NYC audiences a special premiere of the #Derby just hours after it ran. By commissioning the Louisville Photographic Society to film the Derby, then chartering planes to rush the film to NYC for processing and editing so it could be aired that evening.

Carridder Jones was an author, playwright, and historian originally from South Carolina. Mrs. Jones, a Louisvillian, also partnered with the Filson by conducting an oral project called “Historic African American Neighborhoods in Jefferson County.” #KentuckyAuthors #LouisvilleHistory #WomenWhoWrite

Paul Laurence Dunbar (1872-1906) was one of the first Black poets recognized nationally. Born in Ohio to parents who were enslaved in Kentucky prior to being emancipated. Dunbar started writing poems at a young age. Over his short career, he published poetry, short stories, novels, and more.

Ballet and Baseball was a fundraising event in 1984 between the Louisville Ballet Guild, the Louisville Ballet Civic Company, and the Louisville Redbirds. Dale Brannon and the Louisville Redbirds collaborated on a short collection of dances based loosely on the theme of baseball.
