Biggest pet peeve of mine that beginner writers tend to do is turn to tabletop games (and DnD especially) and try to reverse-engineer its systems and mechanics into regular fiction. Happens a lot with the magic system. That's literally doing it backwards, DnD was designed to systematize fiction
