A gorgeous weeping cherry tree in bloom at Honmanji Temple🌸 This 90-year-old weeping cherry, a symbol of the temple, blooms from late March for about two weeks. Peonies follow after the blossoms fade. One of Kyoto’s most beloved cherry trees.

84 years ago today, President Roosevelt signed Executive Order 9066, ordering the removal and incarceration of more than 120,000 Japanese Americans, about two-thirds of whom were US citizens. The Day of Remembrance this year comes as we see DHS buying land and warehouses for more camps now.

On this day, the United States Navy began landing 70,000 U.S. Marines at Iwo Jima. Over the course of the following five weeks, more than 6,100 Marines would die on the the island; this was the first and last battle in the Pacific war in which American casualties outnumbered Japanese. 1/2

Reading Mizuki's diaries from this time paint a different picture than what he portrays in Showa. The real Mizuki was much more thoughtful, more introspective. He wrote upon being drafted "I sometimes think being alive at this time is the only thing worse than death."

Incredible news, the wreck of the Tsushima Maru has been surveyed. This is the first time the site has been visited since the it was discovered in 1997, 53 years after its sinking by USS Bowfin. 1,484 people, including 780 schoolchildren, were killed. #NavalHistory
