I see the University of York is offering a fixed-term post in public history for the same salary (£37k) I earned for a fixed-term post in public history, also in Yorkshire, in 2012. Had the rate risen with inflation it would now be £53k.

'Everyone involved needs to face up to the reality of the current funding model.' Too true, but we can't 'face up to the reality of the current funding model' if we hive off undergraduates and taught PG students from universities' other core functions and their financial challenges, e.g. research.

Physics is under the cosh, Astronomy and Chemistry in peril, Geography is losing territory, English, Modern Languages and History are among the many shrinking UK disciplines. Surely it's time to have a concerted, structured conversation about universities and the national research base.

If you're living somewhere outside the USA, one thing you can do is pressure your leaders to boycott World Cup and Olympic events here.
