Poster Paster (1984) Turning regular jobs into game concepts was quite popular, especially among british developers. In this game, you play a guy who has to glue advertisement posters onto billboards. 1/3

King's Ransom/The Adventure (1986) A very short text adventure with graphics, that was included as an example with Incentive Software's Graphic Adventure Creator. The goal is to find enough gold to pay the king's ransom, and with only five or six rooms and no real puzzles, that's fairly easy. 1/3

Rescue on Fractalus! (1985) Rescue on Fractalus was of the two first games released by Lucasfilm Games (later LucasArts), and is an impressive and fun space action game seen from the perspective of the pilot. It uses fractal-based graphics to create impressive landscapes to explore. 1/3

Fire One (1983) A pretty decent version of Exidy's arcade original. This is a submarine game where the goal is to destroy either the enemy fleet or the enemy sub that’s actively trying to destroy your fleet. The enemy sub can also attack you, but you can dive to get out of the way. 1/3

Barbarian II: The Dungeon of Drax (1988) Here's a third screenshot from Barbarian II (Axe of Rage if you're in the US). A great-looking flick screen action game from Palace, where you navigate three large and labyrinthine levels to find the objects needed to defeat the evil sorcerer Drax. 1/3

Crazy Men (1983) A simple collect-em-up. As the blue face, grab the gold and bring it back to the house (again and again) while avoiding the scary looking faces that move from side to side. It's copyright Corbois Software from the Netherlands, but I don't know if it was made by them originally. 1/2

Pool of Radiance (1988) The first of SSI's Gold Box role-playing games based on AD&D – and perhaps the best. Your party of heroes arrives at a town called Phlan, and the goal is simply to restore it to its former glory by clearing its various areas of monsters and bandits. 1/4

Tau Ceti (1986) Promoted as «The Greatest Game Ever Written,» Tau Ceti might not be that but it is actually quite impressive. It's a first-person open world game with 3D graphics, where you control a hovercraft and explore the planet Tau Ceti III. 1/3

Star Trek – The Computer Game (1985) The original Star Trek was created for mainframes in 1971 by Mike Mayfield. It was later ported to BASIC and published in Dave Ahl’s famous book 101 BASIC Computer Games, before being expanded into Super Star Trek by Bob Leedom in 1974. 1/4

The Dallas Quest (1984) Another screenshot from The Dallas Quest (I have so many because I was crazy enough to complete the thing), an interactive fiction game based on the TV show Dallas. 1/3

Wonder Boy in Monsterland (1989) Also known as Super Wonder Boy, this is a pretty good conversion of the arcade game that seems to feature all the original content including the different secrets. It's a colourful action platformer with an economy and ways to improve your character. 1/3

I Play: Football Champ. (1991) A very interesting football (soccer) game from Italian publisher Simulmondo. It's essentially a 3D football game where you control one player and the camera is positioned right behind him so you basically see the game from his point of view. 1/3

Stunt Car Racer (1989) A proper classic, and a one of a kind game. This is a racing sim that ditches your average racetracks for roller coasters where one slip-up means you'll go flying off the edge. Not only that, but there are jumps and other tricks to contend with. And another car! 1/3

Overrun! A Tactical Game of Modern Land Warfare (1989) This is a wargame designed by Gary Grigsby and published by SSI. Basically a turn-based modern warfare simulator, and known as one of the most complex wargames on the Commodore 64. 1/3

Moonraker (1984/2015) This doesn't have anything to do with the James Bond movie. It's a pretty simple sci-fi arcade game with five distinct levels (not unlike Gorf, for instance). The screenshot is from the first one, a sort of Space Invader meets Missile Command. 1/2

Armageddon (1983) A very early game from Ocean Software, who would go on to become one of the most profilic developers and publishers on the Commodore 64. As you've no doubt guessed, it's «Missile Command at home». 1/3

Aztec Challenge (1983) This is a cult classic from US publisher/developer Cosmi, designed and programmed by Paul Norman. You need to complete seven varied and difficult trials, starting with this one where you must run all the way to the pyramid while dodging spears thrown from the side. 1/3

Definition (1983) A public domain word puzzle game written in BASIC, based on the Canadian TV game show Definition (which aired from 1974 to 1989). Two players compete, and the point is to guess the correct phrase based on the clues offered. 1/3

Blok Copy (2011) A well made free puzzle game released by Cosine as a contribution to the 2011 RGCD 16kb gamedev compo. The computer will shuffle the rows and columns, and you need to restore it back to how it was. It controls a bit like a 2D Rubik's Cube. 1/2

Wacky Races (1992) A side-scrolling racing/platform game based on the animated TV series of the same name, which was being revived as Fender Bender 500 at the time. You play Dick Dastardly and Muttley in the Dirty Truckster, and have to navigate several levels full of obstacles and enemies. 1/3

Lunar Outpost (1984) A pretty unknown game from Epyx, this one sees you defending a lunar outpost against alien attacks. You view the outpost from above, and have to move to intercept the enemies (preferably without them destroying too many buildings before you can catch them). 1/3

Shinobi (1989) This is a very good conversion of the Sega arcade game, done by Virgin Games. Like in the arcades, it's a side-scrolling action game where you play Joe Musashi, who has taken it upon himself to defeat the ninja crime syndicate Zeeed. 1/2

Buggy Boy (1987) A great conversion of Taito's arcade racer. Buggy Boy (also known as Speed Buggy) is one of those racing games that just try to be a fun game first and foremost, with a ton of cool things to do to increase your score and just have fun on the quite unrealistic tracks it offers. 1/3

Bandits (1983) A very well liked game published by Sirius Software. Bandits is apparently a clone of the Taito arcade game Stratovox. The game puts you in command of a spaceship at the bottom of the screen, and have to deal with 28 surprisingly varied waves of alien invaders. 1/3

Falcon Patrol (1983) This is one of those games that seemed to end up in every collection on pirated games on disk and tape. You pilot a Harrier-esque VTOL fighter jet in a not as sci-fi take on Defender, where your aim is to protect a desert town from being bombed by enemy planes. 1/3

Zoids: The Battle Begins (1986) An officially licensed game based on the dino-robot-toys, published by Martech. Instead of being a simple action game, it's a deep and really weird exploration type thing. It's got a near-impenetrable user interface if you don't have the manual (as you can see). 1/3

Enlightenment: Druid II (1987) This is the stunning loading screen from Druid II, created by Paul Docherty ( @d0kk.bsky.social ). The game itself is somewhat inspired by Gauntlet, but with an advanced spell system that even allows you to call in another player to help you (as a golem). 1/3

Rampage (1989) The concept of this arcade conversion is simple: Destroy all the skyscrapers while avoiding the attacks from the military, and gobble up whoever gets in the way. We've already seen Rampage here, but that was the Euro version (1987) and this is the US one (1989). 1/3

Motor Mania (1982) A very early and pretty simple top-down racing game. You drive your racing car along the scrolling track, which periodically changes style. You have to avoid the occational other car, rockslide or crossing fire engine, as well as some other obstacles. 1/2

Fairy Well (2011) A simple but fun explore-em-up where you have to traverse procedurally generated environments in search of crystals as well as coins and other helpful items. It's quite good, if somewhat repetitive towards the end. Follow the link in the reply to find the game. 1/2

African Safari (1984) A text/graphics adventure game where you play Dr. Livingstone in search of a diamond. He's one of the laziest adventure game protagonists ever, and won't even pick up these peanuts (in Africa?). So the first order of business is to get a monkey to do his bidding. 1/3

MicroMud (1988) Here's an odd one; an attempt to recreate the experience of playing Multi-User Dungeon (MUD), but offline on the Commodore 64. Realtime and all, with computer-controlled players running about and doing all sorts of stuff while you play (sometimes attacking you, too). 1/4

Barbarian: The Ultimate Warrior (1987) An impressive one-on-one fighter where two barbarians meet for a duel to the death. Barbarian has a well thought out combat system that takes full advantage of the joystick to offer a lot of tactical freedom. 1/3

Beach-Head II: The Dictator Strikes Back This is the rescue level in Beach Head II, an action war game from Access Software featuring multiple varied levels to play through. In this level, your goal is to help prisoners escape the dictator's prison camp while his forces try to kill them. 1/4

Olympic Skier (1983) A simple but somewhat fun skiing game. There are three events - slalom, ski jumping and downhill - and the game supports multiplayer. A typical game lasts only a few minutes, after which you get this very rude rating screen. 1/3

1942 (1986) An okay port of Capcom's very popular arcade game. It's a vertically scrolling SHMUP where the player controls a Lockheed P-38 Lightning and has to get past waves after waves of Japanese planes in order to reach Tokyo and destroy the air fleet. 1/3

Barbarian II: The Dungeon of Drax (1988) Barbarian II is a great-looking flick screen action game inspired by Conan the Barbarian, Red Sonja, et.c. It features large and well-animated player sprites (male and a female protagonists, portrayed by Michael van Wijk and Maria Whittaker on the cover).1/3

The Train: Escape to Normandy (1987) Another one from Accolade, this is a really interesting mix of steam train sim, action and strategy lite game. You control a pair of French resistance fighters during WW2, and are stealing a nazi train filled with art treasures taken from occupied France. 1/3

Super Alien (1982) An interesting one, as it was not developed for the C64, but rather the ill-fated Commodore MAX Machine, which the C64 is compatible with. Unlike a number of other MAX Machine games, it did not get a repackaged C64 release in the west, so AFAIK it was only released in Japan. 1/4

Space Crusade (1992) These days games based on Warhammer or Warhammer 40.000 are everywhere, but this was one of the first really great ones. It's a tactical turn based game with rules based on the board game, where you lead your space marines into various battle scenarios. 1/3

Parallax (1983) This is a single-screen action-game where you fly around in a grid-based arena picking up glowing things while trying to avoid being shot by the missile launchers that move along the four walls. You can shoot the missiles if you're fast enough. 1/2

Grand Prix Circuit (1988) Just blew the engine of my Ferrari Formula 1 car in Grand Prix Circuit, as I was too focused on passing the car ahead to remember to shift gears. Oops! This was on the old Hockenheim circuit, which is quite different (and a bit more boring) nowadays. 1/3

Skate or Die! (1987) This was one of the coolest games to own if you were a kid in the eighties. It's a skateboarding game with a number of different events to participate in (two half-pipe events, downhill racing and a two player jousting thing), and you can play alone or with a friend. 1/3

Magic Jigsaw (1983) Another type-in game, this one is from The Commodore 64 Games Book: 21 Sensational Games, by Owen and Audrey Bishop (published by Granada Publishing). As the title says, the book contains listings for 21 games, all written in BASIC, and this jigsaw game is one of them. 1/3

Solo Flight (1983) A flight simulator created by Sid Meier, which like the more famous Flight Simulator-series focuses on civilian aviation and not military stuff. Despite featuring a dashboard on-screen, it's actually a third-person game, and the plane in the screenshot is the player's plane. 1/2

Krakout (1987) As is obvious from the screenshot, this is a Breakout/Arkanoid-style game. The bat is on the side of the screen, not the bottom, but otherwise it works mostly as you'd expect. It's pretty good, though. Fast and smooth, and despite being joystick only, the controls are tight. 1/3
