LuftrauserZ (2017) An enjoyable demake of the hit indie game Luftrausers. Like in the original, you & your plane must to survive relentless attacks from ever more dangerous enemies. Achieve various in-game goals to unlock new parts for your plane, some of which drastically change its behaviour. 1/3

Das Spukschloß/The Secret of Kandar (1985/86) A flip-screen action adventure where you explore a haunted castle. You'll find various items which can be used (only two can be carried at the same time), such as keys and daggers. You must also deal with angry suits of armour and deadly animals. 1/3

Chamonix Challenge/Final Assault (1987) Mountain climbing games are popular these days, and Chamonix Challenge from Infogrames (Final Assault in the US) was one of the first. Choose a peak, pack your bags with what you'll need (including a disk if you want the ability to save) and head out. 1/2

Super Sprint (1987) Like Dandy, this is an Atari-game converted to the Commodore 64 by Activision-owned Electric Dreams. Super Sprint is a top down racer that was a hit in the arcades, with the headline feature being that it allowed three human players and one computer opponent. 1/3

Lysis (1989) A clone of Tetris with with smooth movement of the pieces (but it's still grid-based, so the smoothness just adds a somewhat annoying delay) and really terrible sound effects. Meh ... it's serviceable. It's in German, and was published on the Golden Disk 64 disk magazine. 1/2

Attack of the Mutant Camels (1983) A simple but fun blaster by indie legend Jeff Minter. It will be included in Llamasoft: The Jeff Minter Story from @digitaleclipse.bsky.social, a huge collection of Minter classics which also features over one hour of documentary footage by @d0kk.bsky.social. 1/3

Eye of the Beholder (2022) A truly impressive unofficial conversion of the classic RPG by Westwood Studios and SSI, and currently rated the best Commodore 64 game ever over at Lemon64. It's really faithful to the original, looks and sounds great, and plays very well too. 1/3

Questprobe 1: The Incredible Hulk (1984) This is the very first puzzle in Questprobe 1: The Incredible Hulk. As Bruce Banner, you're tied to a chair and needs to escape. So you have to make yourself angry enough to turn into the Hulk somehow, and you can see the solution in the screenshot. 1/3

Remember cracktro (1997/2000) The first non-game screenshot here, this is from a cracktro by a German cracking group called Remember. It was created in 1997, and reused several times – this time in 2000, for their cracked version of Access Software's bowling game 10th Frame. 1/3

Hopto (1985) A bit of a weird coincidence, as this is another release by Mastertronic and there's a strange connection to Gaplus (from my last post) too. Hopto is in fact a conversion of the arcade game Bongo, one of two games released by Jetsoft that ran on modified Galaxian hardware. 1/3

Gaplus (1988) The loading screen for Gaplus, an official conversion of Namco's 1984 arcade game Gaplus (the third game in the Galaxian series, and sequel to Galaga). The original was fairly old when Mastertronic released this Commodore 64 version, but it wasn't a full-price game. 1/2

Alien Infiltration (1998) A choose your own adventure created by Cheryl de Boissiere and published by the diskmag Loadstar, originally a sister publication to Softdisk (in the same stable as Big Blue Disk & Gamer's Edge, famous from Masters of Doom) but had become independent in the late 90s. 1/3

Robin to the Rescue (1983) Love is in the air in this basic clone of Hunchback. You play as Robin Hood, and need to cross twelve screens full of various obstacles in order to rescue Maid Marian, which is what just happened here. Hence the floating heart, obviously. 1/3

9 to 5 Typing (1984) Why, it's a typing game based on the comedy film 9 to 5 featuring Dolly Parton, Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin, of course! Learn ten finger typing in various "minigames" that play animations inspired by scenes from the movie. Most of the text is also based on the movie. 1/3

Match Day II (1987) The sequel to Jon Ritman's Match Day, which was basically an attempt at recreating the C64 hit International Soccer for the ZX Spectrum. It's a pretty decent football (soccer) game with good graphics and an in-depth control system, though a bit slow perhaps? 1/2

Fire and Forget 2 (1990) This is a racing action game that came out for a number of platforms, and was mediocre at best. The Commodore 64 version was probably the worst of them all, and it's boring, repetitive and no fun at all to play. Though it is at least fairly smooth. 1/3

IK+ (1987) Perhaps the best fighting game on the Commodore 64, and in my opinion still one of the best games in the genre on any platform. It's a karate game where three fighters compete at the same time. Up to two can be controlled by humans, while the third will always be computer controlled. 1/3

Night Mission Pinball (1982) An early but very good attempt at making a pinball simulator from American developer subLOGIC (who are more known for their Flight Simulator games that eventually became a Microsoft franchise). The theme is a night time bombing run, suitably enough. 1/4

Labyrinth (1987) Contrary to popular belief, Maniac Mansion was not Lucasfilm Games' first graphics adventure. That honour instead goes to Labyrinth, produced by @davidbfox.com. Labyrinth was based on the Jim Henson-movie of the same name, and features characters and scenes from the movie. 1/3

Pneumatic Hammers (1987) This is a very, very odd game from Robert Stein's Andromeda Software and published by Firebird on their Silver Label (£1.99). I can't find any credits for the Commodore 64 version, but it gives me the same vibes that some of Andromeda's Hungarian imports do. 1/3

Bubble Bobble (1987) The official Commodore 64 port of Taito's arcade game Bubble Bobble is not entirely arcade perfect, but it is still a great version that I actually somewhat prefer over the original. A bouncy and colourful single-screen platformer with a great soundtrack and cute graphics. 1/3

Redhawk (1986) A very interesting text & graphics adventure that uses image panels like a comic book to illustrate what is happening during the game. You play as Kevin Oliver, a seemingly ordinary guy who can transform into a superhero called Redhawk by saying "KWAH". 1/3

Dandy (1986) The original Dandy on the Atari 8-bit was the main inspiration for the arcade hit Gauntlet (and there were some legal issues between Gauntlet-maker Atari and the developer of Dandy, which were apparently resolved when they gave him a Gauntlet-cabinet). 1/3

Poster Paster (1984) Turning regular jobs into game concepts was quite popular, especially among british developers. In this game, you play a guy who has to glue advertisement posters onto billboards. 1/3

King's Ransom/The Adventure (1986) A very short text adventure with graphics, that was included as an example with Incentive Software's Graphic Adventure Creator. The goal is to find enough gold to pay the king's ransom, and with only five or six rooms and no real puzzles, that's fairly easy. 1/3

Rescue on Fractalus! (1985) Rescue on Fractalus was of the two first games released by Lucasfilm Games (later LucasArts), and is an impressive and fun space action game seen from the perspective of the pilot. It uses fractal-based graphics to create impressive landscapes to explore. 1/3

Fire One (1983) A pretty decent version of Exidy's arcade original. This is a submarine game where the goal is to destroy either the enemy fleet or the enemy sub that’s actively trying to destroy your fleet. The enemy sub can also attack you, but you can dive to get out of the way. 1/3

Barbarian II: The Dungeon of Drax (1988) Here's a third screenshot from Barbarian II (Axe of Rage if you're in the US). A great-looking flick screen action game from Palace, where you navigate three large and labyrinthine levels to find the objects needed to defeat the evil sorcerer Drax. 1/3

Crazy Men (1983) A simple collect-em-up. As the blue face, grab the gold and bring it back to the house (again and again) while avoiding the scary looking faces that move from side to side. It's copyright Corbois Software from the Netherlands, but I don't know if it was made by them originally. 1/2

Pool of Radiance (1988) The first of SSI's Gold Box role-playing games based on AD&D – and perhaps the best. Your party of heroes arrives at a town called Phlan, and the goal is simply to restore it to its former glory by clearing its various areas of monsters and bandits. 1/4

Tau Ceti (1986) Promoted as «The Greatest Game Ever Written,» Tau Ceti might not be that but it is actually quite impressive. It's a first-person open world game with 3D graphics, where you control a hovercraft and explore the planet Tau Ceti III. 1/3

Star Trek – The Computer Game (1985) The original Star Trek was created for mainframes in 1971 by Mike Mayfield. It was later ported to BASIC and published in Dave Ahl’s famous book 101 BASIC Computer Games, before being expanded into Super Star Trek by Bob Leedom in 1974. 1/4

The Dallas Quest (1984) Another screenshot from The Dallas Quest (I have so many because I was crazy enough to complete the thing), an interactive fiction game based on the TV show Dallas. 1/3

Wonder Boy in Monsterland (1989) Also known as Super Wonder Boy, this is a pretty good conversion of the arcade game that seems to feature all the original content including the different secrets. It's a colourful action platformer with an economy and ways to improve your character. 1/3

I Play: Football Champ. (1991) A very interesting football (soccer) game from Italian publisher Simulmondo. It's essentially a 3D football game where you control one player and the camera is positioned right behind him so you basically see the game from his point of view. 1/3

Stunt Car Racer (1989) A proper classic, and a one of a kind game. This is a racing sim that ditches your average racetracks for roller coasters where one slip-up means you'll go flying off the edge. Not only that, but there are jumps and other tricks to contend with. And another car! 1/3

Overrun! A Tactical Game of Modern Land Warfare (1989) This is a wargame designed by Gary Grigsby and published by SSI. Basically a turn-based modern warfare simulator, and known as one of the most complex wargames on the Commodore 64. 1/3

Moonraker (1984/2015) This doesn't have anything to do with the James Bond movie. It's a pretty simple sci-fi arcade game with five distinct levels (not unlike Gorf, for instance). The screenshot is from the first one, a sort of Space Invader meets Missile Command. 1/2

Armageddon (1983) A very early game from Ocean Software, who would go on to become one of the most profilic developers and publishers on the Commodore 64. As you've no doubt guessed, it's «Missile Command at home». 1/3

Aztec Challenge (1983) This is a cult classic from US publisher/developer Cosmi, designed and programmed by Paul Norman. You need to complete seven varied and difficult trials, starting with this one where you must run all the way to the pyramid while dodging spears thrown from the side. 1/3

Definition (1983) A public domain word puzzle game written in BASIC, based on the Canadian TV game show Definition (which aired from 1974 to 1989). Two players compete, and the point is to guess the correct phrase based on the clues offered. 1/3

Blok Copy (2011) A well made free puzzle game released by Cosine as a contribution to the 2011 RGCD 16kb gamedev compo. The computer will shuffle the rows and columns, and you need to restore it back to how it was. It controls a bit like a 2D Rubik's Cube. 1/2

Wacky Races (1992) A side-scrolling racing/platform game based on the animated TV series of the same name, which was being revived as Fender Bender 500 at the time. You play Dick Dastardly and Muttley in the Dirty Truckster, and have to navigate several levels full of obstacles and enemies. 1/3

Lunar Outpost (1984) A pretty unknown game from Epyx, this one sees you defending a lunar outpost against alien attacks. You view the outpost from above, and have to move to intercept the enemies (preferably without them destroying too many buildings before you can catch them). 1/3
