With David Pocock and the crossbench we have just managed to drag the Government to deliver more home care packages, but this report shows that from November 1 a massive number of pensioners and part-pensioners will be forking out more for basic care and support.

The Greens and advocates have been trying to warn people about the new Aged Care Act for months. Now this report confirms our worst fears. A co-payment tsunami is about to break on older Australians, thanks to Labor’s dodgy deal with the Coalition to protect provider bottom lines.

Labor must stop gaslighting the public. Opening new coal and gas is the opposite of climate action. Last week the Minister said he wouldn't call his upcoming environmental laws ‘Nature Positive’. Maybe that’s because they’re going to be ‘Coal and Gas Positive’ instead.

Glencore’s Ulan thermal coal mine near Mudgee was already approved to mine up to 20 million tonnes of thermal coal each year. The extension will add an extra 18.8 million tonnes, and extend the mine's approval to 2045. It will also clear up to 37 hectares of native vegetation.

The Environment Minister has approved a coal mine extension overnight – the first of the new Parliament. This is a decision that will lock Australia into providing coal for decades, and put threatened wildlife at risk. This is not climate action. This is a climate crime.

Older people deserve to be treated with respect, dignity and care, and they deserve a system focused on their needs, not the bottom lines of providers or what’s politically expedient. In a wealthy country like Australia, we can afford to look after our older people.

Despite today’s win, much more work needs to be done. There are still over 200,000 people on the waitlist, and many older people and their families are anxious about the changes coming on November 1 that will see costs rise for a third of full pensioners.

BIG GREENS WIN! Labor will begin releasing 20,000 home care packages immediately after suffering a humiliating defeat in the aged care showdown in the Senate. This is a great result for older people desperately waiting for urgent care.

Rationing care like this, when the Department and providers have told us there is no reason for it, is utterly indefensible. If Labor won’t choose to do the right thing, the Senate will make them.

On Friday the Department told the inquiry I chaired that there is no reason why the government can’t release more packages, and providers have told us they’re ready to go. The only thing standing in the way of older people getting the care they need is Labor.

The 48th parliament could achieve real progress, the Greens will keep fighting for climate and the environment, a transition to clean energy, an end to native forest logging, protection for our biodiversity, and no more coal and gas.

Minister Watt is now engaged in a lobbying exercise to dupe other nations when he should have rejected Woodside’s extension in the first place. It’s not too late to cancel the draft approval - to give Murujuga its best shot at World Heritage listing, and protect the climate from this carbon bomb.

It’s outrageous that the conditions of the draft approval remain secret while Woodside negotiates them with the Minister, at the same time as UNESCO considering the fate of the rock art.

Minister Watt’s capitulation to the fossil fuel industry risks sacrificing the world’s oldest art gallery for another 45 years of Woodside profits, and these secret draft conditions can only be a fig leaf for gas profiteering.

To give Murujuga’s ancient rock art the best chance of World Heritage listing, Minister Watt should cancel the draft approval for Woodside’s 45 year extension on operating its gas proposal. UNESCO has already warned that Woodside’s gas plant is threatening the longevity of the rock art.

The Greens stand with Raelene Cooper and Save Our Songlines for the protection of rock art exemplifying tens of thousands of years of culture. We want to see this global treasure listed as World Heritage. What we don’t want is to see it destroyed by acidic emissions from Woodside.

This week marks two years since the Robodebt Royal Commission and still Labor have refused to act on the commission’s recommendations to protect income recipients. ⤵️

The Greens will continue to support community calls for an independent and robust mechanism for police accountability in the NT and self-determined solutions for alternatives to police and community-controlled health services.

For the past three years Kumanjayi Walker's family and community have travelled long distances to listen and participate in this inquest. Our hearts are with them, and with the community of Yuendumu. They deserve real action and real justice.

Kumanjayi Walker was only 19 when he was killed by police in 2019 in his home community of Yuendumu. The coronial inquest into his death has exposed deep failures of justice and found the NT Police to be ‘an organisation with hallmarks of institutional racism’.

It's time to fund real action on closing the gap and properly resource community led solutions, and the Greens are ready to work with Labor to get it done.

No child should be locked up in a jail, and First Nations children are 29 times as likely as non-indigenous young people to be in detention. Raising the age of criminal responsibility is a long-held Greens position, and a key measure towards closing the gap.

It’s clear from the events of recent weeks that First Nations justice must be an urgent priority of the 48th parliament, and the Greens are ready to work with Labor to get outcomes.

We urgently need independent oversight and to address the rampant systemic racism that can exist within the police force. Otherwise deaths in custody will continue to climb & First Nations people will continue to be put in harm's way.

It was absurd enough that an independent inquiry into the death of Kumanjayi White was rejected, allowing police to forge ahead with investigating themselves yet again. Now, the NT Gov has scrapped its review of systemic racism in the NT police. Where is the justice?
