Last year it was the Greens who fought for and won stronger enviro laws and made it harder to fast-track new coal and gas. To have a safe climate future, we must put people and the planet ahead of corporate interests. And only the Greens are fighting for that.

This approval is yet another reminder that Labor won’t stand up to big coal or big gas and take meaningful climate action. They won’t fight for us. Not while they’re beholden to the big fossil fuel corporations that fund their election campaigns.

Today, under the cover of the Liberals tearing each other down, Labor has approved another coal mine extension. Extending Middlemount to 2044 means Labor has now approved 35 fossil fuel projects. In the middle of the climate crisis, they're approving more coal & gas.

Additional funding is welcome, but without accountable delivery plans and genuine First Nations partnership it won't close the gap. Communities have the solutions, Labor must now show the political will for Truth, Treaty and justice.

And outside the report outcomes, the attempted bombing of an Invasion Day rally in Boorloo was a chilling reminder that racism and far-right hatred targeting First Nations people is escalating. The time for leadership is now.

First Nations women face disproportionate violence. We welcome the “Our Ways, Strong Ways, Our Voices” plan, but it should not have taken so long for government to listen to First Nations women calling for a standalone, community-led plan to end violence.

First Nations people deserve much bolder action on truth, treaty and deaths in custody. Raise the age of criminal responsibility, end arbitrary child removals, & reform cultural heritage laws so consent, self-determination, & First Nations decision-making are central.

The report today is sobering. I am deeply distressed that it shows almost no progress from last year. More First Nations people are incarcerated & dying by suicide than last year. More First Nations kids are out of their homes and not on track to meet developmental milestones.

Closing the Gap has stalled with only 4 of 19 targets on track. The Greens urge Labor to show ambition and courage to deliver real outcomes for First Nations justice. Incremental change won't close the gap by 2031 like Labor promised.

The delay in designating this an act of terror and the silence from parts of the media and political class has spoken volumes. The Greens remain in solidarity with First Nations communities and will continue to support their calls for justice.

Finally. This violent act targeting First Nations people on Invasion Day should have been investigated as terrorism and treated with the seriousness it deserved from the day it happened.

New figures show the Capital Gains Tax discount will blow a quarter-trillion dollar hole in the budget over the next 10 yrs. Considerably more than the $205 bn it has cost over its 25 years. The richest 1% of income earners will get a staggering 59% of the benefit.

Labor should be looking after people, not profits. Stop turbocharging house prices by bankrolling property investment. And while you’re at it, put limits on rent increases. It’s just common sense.

The solutions already exist, they work around the world. Labor could start by scrapping the $12.3 billion they waste each year on tax breaks for property investors. Property investors are rushing into the market at record rates and driving up house prices.

The government could end the housing crisis tomorrow. Instead, they are choosing to tinker around the edges of the housing crisis, while you pay the price. Mortgage holders will now be paying more to the big banks. Renters will have their rents increased. It shouldn’t be on you.

The only winners out of today’s interest rate increase are the big banks. And they don’t need the win. They’re already making 200k profit off the average mortgage! This government is choosing to let ordinary people cop the pain, while corporate profits soar.

While Labor chooses to tinker around the edges of a housing crisis, a whole generation is locked out of home ownership. Last year Labor handed $12.3bn in tax concessions to property investors, while social housing numbers dropped to a record low. These are choices.

Politics is about choices. This government is choosing to spend more on tax breaks for landlords than on social housing, homelessness and rent assistance combined. While you're getting smashed by unlimited rent increases and massive mortgage repayments.

Shame on you Labor. More $$$ on investor tax breaks for the wealthy than on - combined - social housing, rent subsidies and homelessness. Who ARE you?

Despite clearly being an attempt to terrorise First Nations communities and their allies, it’s not being investigated as attempted terrorism. The Greens back First Nations elders calling out a double standard. The AFP must investigate this attack for potential terrorism offences.

The Invasion Day rally in Boorloo/Perth was targeted and attacked with an explosive device. The silence from the right has been deafening. The same politicians who have spent the last month politicising violence are now nowhere to be found.

I also acknowledge the tireless work of the Australian Greens First Nations Network (Blak Greens) in elevating First Nations campaigns within the Greens and across the country. We continue to fight alongside First Nations people for Treaty, Truth and Justice.

Each year, 26 January feels different. Each year, I see more people choosing to listen to First Nations voices, rather than look away. More and more of us are prepared to ask hard questions, and sit with uncomfortable truths. That gives me hope.

First Nations people continue to die in custody, children are locked up at alarming rates, and the gap in health, education and living standards keeps widening. We cannot keep pretending that fixing this is someone else’s responsibility.

For First Nations people 26 January marks an invasion that led to ongoing dispossession, oppression and inequality. It is a day not to celebrate but to mourn. It is a reminder of the survival and the resistance First Nations people have always shown.

Recognising 26 January as a day of invasion is not about division, but about respect, honesty and connection. It is about acknowledging the truth that sovereignty was never ceded. This always was and always will be Aboriginal land.

Labor has teamed up with the Liberals with a last minute deal to pass dangerous new laws limiting speech and political expression. The Greens condemn the major parties for rushing through these laws that will have real impacts on people trying to speak out for human rights and against genocide.
