If you think they’re bad and that they must lose at all costs then you should probably be doing something right now and it’s not just donating cash.

Conversations about the future of higher education in the US need to start from the unfortunate, basic fact that both Democrats and Republicans agree with Reagan that government should not subsidize curiosity driven learning and inquiry.

I think a really dark comedy about George Washington's service in the 7 years war is possible to make, but I'm not sure it should be attempted

One of my absolute favorite things on Frasier is when three characters are in a scene and two are bickering while one is watching it back and forth like a tennis match and laughing their ass off

Class in the US is entirely a matter of aesthetics now. Rich suburban kids are “country”. Beard Dudes who look like they love IPAs are “working class.” Teachers who make $32,000 a year but have to dress up sort of nice in JCPenney clothes are “elites“. None of these words mean anything anymore.

one of the reasons i get real mad about “the current moment is a historical anomaly, it’s okay to revert” is that the modern state no longer having amputation in its criminal code is also a historical anomaly

Shout out to France and Spain for wrecking their own economies and empires to give their unshod weird little buddies a hand to independence. Probably they wouldn't do it again if you gave the House of Bourbon a crystal ball, but you live and learn (or don't live but still learn)

I am once again asking us not to build our political beliefs based on what happened on TV shows drom the 90s. I remember you maniacs trying to make arguments about cost of living using Homer Simpson, it was nonsense then and it's worse now

My neighbor told me Protestants keep eating his New World profits so I asked him how many New World Profits he has and he said he just goes to the Americas and gets more profits afterwards so I said it sounds like he's just feeding silver to Protestants and then the Pope started crying

The problem with "does your loved experience match the data" is so often those two things are asking completely different questions. If you're looking at crime data, the question is generally "how many crimes were committed." For crime lived experience, it's "did I see a homeless person this week?"

People in Iowa or Wisconsin only matter to them insofar as they’re Iowans or Wisconsinites, as an idea, and not because they’re real people. They’d more readily describe Milwaukee or Chicago as being on the moon before they describe them as Midwest.

The implicit media consensus is that urban voters should not be able to overrule rural voters, but that rural voters should be able to overrule urban voters, an assumption so axiomatic and unquestionable that nobody even understands they're making it.

I disagree here, the problem is not the dinner, it is Trump. The WH Correspondents Dinner, as actually practiced, is a sort of humiliation-of-the-powerful ritual common and valuable in republics since antiquity. That Trump is incapable of doing this is yet another signal of his unfitness to lead.

Why do you give a shit what "counts" as reading? Why are you, a grown adult, treating your free time like a grade school reading contest and why do we need daily reassurance that audiobooks and such still "count"? Stand on your own two feet, you don't need everyone to approve of everything you do
