First snow, now meteors.

This is the view at 2600 feet, south of the White Mtns right now, middle of the day on May 30. Snow has been mixing in at the lowest elevations over the last hour. Less than two weeks ago many of these places were in the low to mid 90s.

As a fellow bald I am sad, but as a Liverpool fan I feel a sense of relief.

It mightn't look like much. But this little red dot is a supermassive black hole about 50 million times more massive than the Sun, its light dating to just 700 million years after the Big Bang—when the Universe was just 5% its current age. It is insane to me that we can see this far back.

This is a newly processed view of the largest volcano in the Solar System, Olympus Mons. It's 21 km tall. It's as wide as Arizona. Metropolitan LA fits inside its summit caldera. Its basal cliff is 7 km high. And it started to grow ~3.5 billion years ago but has lavas only 2 million years old.

This is probably going to go up there as one of the most pronounced success stories in WoFS guidance history. We’re talking 3+ of lead time with this LLUH signal, and it was rather consistent in subsequent forecasts. It did its job falling right into the watch-to-warning time scale.

The Enid, OK EF4 tornadic supercell had a ZDR column area of 70 square km (from our algorithm) ~1 km above the 0˚ C level just prior to tornado formation, consistent with the violent tornadoes from our 2021 paper and others we've looked at since (annotated in updated box plots). 🤔

Weather satellites were able to see the Artemis II launch and re-entry. Space is cool, satellites are cool. It's all cool!!!

He really did luck out with the FEMA stuff that it wasn’t that bad of a tropical season, but eventually this kind of capricious behavior will come back to bite us (like breaking the Forest Service before what could be a pretty bad fire season).

Winter makes way for spring in Central Asia, as the warming temperatures have helped break apart and melt the ice covering Lake Balkhash in Kazakhstan over the last few weeks.

A gorgeous low swirls in the Eastern Pacific. Things that spin are pretty.

Orientale, the multi-ring impact basin that's a focus of Artemis II, is unique as the youngest of the Moon's large impact basins! Orientale's multiple rings are thought to have formed from deformation of the lunar crust and upper mantle in response to impact, generating circumferential ring faults.

Meanwhile on Mars, the Curiosity Rover caught a rather large dust devil this week on Sol 4852.
