Incredible Sentinal-2 satellite imagery of #Melissa at peak intensity before landfall. In the cloud-free areas of the eye you can see the physical effect of the surface wind gradient (2nd image): chaotic whitecapped waves near center transition to extreme sea spray/linear streaking near the eyewall!

I struggle with this. On the one hand I commend the dedication to the mission and public safety. I really feel an immense amount of pride for my organization. On the other this ends up proving we can meet the mission with reduced staff because someone, somewhere will step up and go above and beyond.

This has probably already been posted here, but Melissa has displayed a classic mesovortex pattern that can be modeled in the simplest 2D atmospheric models ("nondivergent barotropic models"). Here's a comparison of this morning's VIS sat and Kossin and Schubert (2001) experiments.

From a crewmember on yesterday's Teal 74 mission into now-Category 5 Hurricane #Melissa. As clear of an eye as you will see in the Atlantic basin.

I was worried for my crew mates when I saw them circling in the eye for over 20 mins. Looks like the very rough ride was confirmed. Plane had to leave early. They reported svr turb and a "sawtooth" eye. Looks like they moved 600-700ft up & down during this stretch in ~1 min.

219-kt peak wind would be the highest wind value a dropsonde has ever recorded, ahead of 215-kt value in Super Typhoon Megi in 2010 & the 210 kt recorded just yesterday in #Hurricane #Melissa. Still needs to be validated… so this data is preliminary.

#Melissa unfortunately is still intensifying. A 9am EDT Tropical Cyclone Update indicates that winds are up to 180 mph, with an estimated minimum pressure of 896 mb. You can see how GLM lightning has 📈 in the past hour, encircling the eye, with eye WV temp still increasing!

Waiting on a dropsonde to confirm, but Melissa is most certainly below 900 hPa right now. Tragically we are about to witness the 2nd or 1st deepest Atlantic hurricane landfall by min MSLP on record in Jamaica.

Well that last burst of convection has wrapped upshear around Melissa. Certainly has "the look" now.

The NHC forecast for Melissa at 15 UTC today was the first time they have ever projected a hurricane to reach 130kt at 96 hours, starting from a 40kt storm. Projecting 130kt at 96 hours is rare, just in general.

It’s only a tornado if it comes from the tornado region of France, otherwise it’s just a sparkling landspout.

Forecasts for Monday morning certainly look a little more interesting than a typical rainband with gusty winds ahead of it. With 0-3 km shear forecast above 40 kt and some instability there is certainly a non-zero chance that we see some severe low-topped convection.

12 years is a long time. A good stretch. But the EF-5 “drought” has ended. Also, this is a lesson to the Monday morning quarterbacks that this took *3 months* to confirm. Good analysis takes time. So save your hot takes immediately after an event.

It should be noted that there certainly have been tornadoes in the past ~12 years (since the previous "most recent" EF5) that had 3 s, 10 m winds well in excess of 200 mph. However, there just haven't been damage indicators to capture those (largely because few DIs can 'hold out' to >200 mph).

Yes it's pretty darn unusual to see two #hurricanes in the North Atlantic basin this close. #Imelda & #Humberto. It has happened recently w/ weaker TCs (e.g., #Philippe & #Rina in 2023), but unsure the last time both systems involved in binary interaction were both ≥65 kt in the NATL. 🌀🔄🌀

I think I’ve settled on aggressive ignorance as the catchphrase for this admin.
