* The top 20 films ranked by each demo group’s share of opening wknd, domestic box office included fewer movies that were ranked #1 among BIPOC, women, and 18- to 34-year-olds in 2024 as compared to 2023. This suggests that these groups were not coming out in droves to see just any generic film./10

“ENTHUSIASM GAP” AMONG KEY DEMO GROUPS APPEARS AT THE BOX OFFICE WHEN THERE IS LESS DIVERSITY ON SCREEN * There was a marked increase in films with all-White casts and a marked decrease in films with majority-BIPOC casts in 2024. 9/

* In a survey of tix buyers in 2024, BIPOC moviegoers who are 18-34 years old appear to be pillars of the moviegoing market. * Among young female moviegoers, women of color, particularly Latinas, are key to driving ticket sales. 8/

YOUNG BIPOC MOVIEGOERS ARE A DRIVING FORCE AT THE BOX OFFICE * BIPOC moviegoers bought the majority of opening wknd, domestic tickets for 7 of the top 10 films & 12 of the top 20 theatrical films in 2024 (ranked by global box office). 7/

* Films with 41%-50% BIPOC casts were the most successful across virtually all metrics, including global & domestic box office, ROI, domestic opening weekend ranking, & no. of intl. markets. 6/

AUDIENCES PREFER DIVERSE FILMS * Despite the shrinking selection of diverse films in 2024, audiences unambiguously flocked to the ones that best represented the nation’s diversity. 5/

* But given that many of these gains were fueled by low-budget, independent films that broke through in an atypical year, it is unclear if the increases will continue. 4/

WOMEN’S REPRESENTATION RISES, BUT WILL IT LAST? * Women posted major gains among leads, where they reached near parity with men, and minimal gains among directors & total roles. 3/

Research universities are often the largest employers in their region. They are often the primary health care providers to communities. This funding shift will not only reduce US research leadership, it will put working people out of work and reduce healthcare access.
