Just saw a pedestrian nearly get hit on a crossing at the junction of Small Heath Highway and Coventry Road. They look really shook up, I felt it just watching. That anyone thinks we should be increasing the speed limit on these roads has a clear disregard for anyone outside a car.

VLR would be terrible for that corridor. I know Coventry is nearby and we love them, but it's woefully underspeced for a major route. If you've dismissed heavy rail then it has to be the next best with tram, but £1.2bn?! How much would this cost in Europe?

I've just read the strategic outline case for mass rapid transit between Birmingham City Centre and Longbridge. 📑 £1.2bn for trams 🚊, £551m for very light rail 🚈 or £113m for bus rapid transit 🚏. The route would be via Smithfield, Pershore Rd to Edgbaston, then across to A38 through to Longbridge.

Roads like the A45 and A47 go through areas at the greatest risk of road harm. Over the past six months, this policy might well have already saved lives. Given that the average speed of A-roads in the city is 16.1mph, reverting speed limits only dials up the severity of crashes and fatalities.

Any Councillor seeking to reverse this policy should consider how they would intend to explain their decision to the first bereaved family of a fatal crash following a reimplementation of 40mph.

If @bhamcitycouncil.bsky.social can tow cars for a parade, they can tow them when they are left in places that endanger wheelchair users, people pushing prams, children walking to school, cyclists, etc. It's a choice. And a statement about official priorities.

So much about this has me screaming into my motonormativity cushion. Why further subsidise all the wealthy people who drive? Why NOT subsidise the poorer people who don't drive?

This is quite appalling. The reduction was in direct response to lives lost. We need strong leadership in transport if we are to tackle the mounting toll of deaths and serious injuries on our roads.

Just to bring you up to date, here's a recent photo of every candidate but one in Birmingham's upcoming municipal elections saying to the father of a child killed while walking ON THE SIDEWALK of a dangerously designed road that they wouldn't support even modest measures to slow drivers down.

It’s not feasible to have cameras or traffic wardens full-time on every street, so if drivers can’t manage to stick to the (vast amount of) space allocated to them, they need to be physically blocked from doing things like this.

Family ride in Birmingham on Friday. Several cars parked in the bike lane meant these kids kept having to ride in the oncoming traffic lane.

The road safety emergency continues unabated meanwhile political leaders are looking around before deciding whether they support well-evidenced life-saving policies.

In the past two days: - A pedestrian has died in the south west of the city after being crashed into during a hit-and-run - A cyclist has suffered serious injuries in the east of the city after another hit-and-run - Someone was injured in a five-car collision in the south of the city

So disappointing to see the lack of political will now in Birmingham for safer streets. After questions from Babiker Yahia, whose 4-year-old daughter Mayar was killed by a driver in April 2024, only one candidate (after quite a pause) backed 20mph limits on all residential streets.

Given that we know default 20mph is the most effective way to saves lives, it really puts this image in context. Do you want default 20mph... read as "raise your hand if you want fewer people killed on our roads". Just one candidate. They're either cowards or callous.

A cat ran out in front of my car earlier, no warning, just shot out straight in front of me ... 😲 I was able to stop in good time though, because I was doing 20mph, because that was the speed limit, because of cats and children. So there you go.

This morning we took a 43 minute cycle from Longbridge to the City Centre. We wanted to show what the current end-to-end @a38cycleway.bsky.social cycle route experience is like. Note that it includes section on pavements, which are shared paths, indicated by the circular blue signs.
