More studies of this type, this time with cleaner hatching

If you want to draw nice looking shapes, a good method to learn doing so is by studying seemingly abstract shapes in nature, such as silhouettes of mountains, stains, shadows, etc. this will also give you a good grasp of the distribution/spacing between them. Here's a recent study as example:
