Thanks to @sumitecon.bsky.social for reminding us that the CMA has done the world a public service through thorough investigation of the search market. Too bad the US court did not consider what the CMA already found about limited search syndication serving as a barrier, not a boost, to competition.

So much to unpack from Judge Mehta’s remedy opinion in the US v. Google search case. If these remedies ultimately go into effect, evidence indicates that Google’s dominance over online search – a critical information pathway for billions of internet users – will remain entrenched. Long 🧵⬇️

There's agreement that engagement-based feeds create harms for individuals and society and reverse chronological feeds are sub-optimal and unrealistic alternatives. KGI's report offers guidelines - centered on transparency, agency, evidence and long-term user value - for building healthier feeds.

Anyone working on platform governance/acctability, online kids safety, or algorithmic feeds needs to read this report, which lights a pathway towards algorithmic systems that put users' long-term interests front and center. So gratified to have convened 15 of the deepest experts to produce this!
