A study of a canine transmissible cancer finds that some tumors have incorporated a large piece of DNA by horizontal transfer. The mechanism can introduce new genetic material, potentially contributing to cancer cell evolution. In PNAS:

The canine transmissible venereal tumour is an ancient cancer that spreads between dogs during mating. In our new paper we show that this cancer has undergone horizontal gene transfer, and has acquired DNA from its host. Read all about it here!
