200 years ago today, October 26, 1825: The Erie Canal was ceremonially opened in Buffalo, New York. The 363-mile-long artificial waterway stretched from Albany on the Hudson River to Buffalo on Lake Erie, connecting the Great Lakes to the Atlantic Ocean. It transformed Buffalo into a major hub.
