This letter from Hyman is 🔥🔥🔥 I love the way he writes, and here he offers withering criticism of any serious consideration of mental illness as discrete categorical “diseases.” How anyone could hold that view in 2024 is beyond me given the wealth of data. Same goes for direct clinical experience.

Check out our latest work published in Computational Psychiatry, which uses Dynamic Causal Modeling to characterize course patterns for depression, mania, and psychosis! Empirical data showed that DCM accurately captured symptom trajectories.
