Today on the @istoriatravel.bsky.social Gallipoli tour was all about terrain. Deep gulleys, imposing cliffs & plenty of inescapable high ground made moving across the peninsula punishing. It could never have been as easy as the plan demanded. With @alexchurchill.bsky.social & @peterhart.bsky.social

Here’s Gully Beach - not a landing spot but pivotal. The wreck is the lighter that Gen. Maude was supposed to escape the peninsula on. Yesterday afternoon we finished up at S Beach and the Turkish memorial for the #Gallipoli campaign. The scale is the same as something like Thiepval 🇹🇷 @istoriatravel.bsky.social @seaspitfires.com @peterhart.bsky.social @danielmcandrew.bsky.social

After the guns, we paid our respects to all of the Frenchmen who fell during the #Gallipoli campaign. There are 12,000 in the ossuaries alone.🇫🇷 @peterhart.bsky.social @istoriatravel.bsky.social @seaspitfires.com @danielmcandrew.bsky.social

After lunch, we spent more time than is probably normal pawing at French gun batteries still in situ at #Gallipoli @seaspitfires.com and @alexchurchill.bsky.social were embarrassingly nerdy; and @peterhart.bsky.social was his usual dignified self… 🇹🇷
