Exploring MLB Data w/ Tableau #2: Trade Deadline. I was aiming to see if there were any major under/overperformers so far this season based on predictive and traditional stats. Then had the idea to use it to predict this year's deadline Main Takeaway: Lots of buyers, not a lot of sellers.

Decided to try and get back into Tableau and other Data Viz tools with more time on my hands since graduating. Big Takeaway: Shorter swing length doesn't compromise OPS and keeps whiff rate low. However, wOBA and HR's are notably lower with shorter swings. Any suggestions or comments appreciated

Cubs send Mervis to Miami for Vidal Brujan. Played pretty much every position in '24, but offensively has been subpar. Brujan (Career, 201 Games): .189/.261/.270 ... -2.1 WAR Chicago has cover at INF with Luis Vasquez & Gage Workman. Brujan's ceiling is lower than both of those guys. Strange move

Matt Mervis and the Marlins could be a perfect match. Jonah Bride was solid last season (.276 AVG//123 wRC+// 1.0 WAR), but 71 games were his career-high in the Majors. Mervis provides more cover and a lefty option off the bench. Never got a chance in Chicago, but now he gets one in Miami

A lot of the discourse around the Bellinger trade has been negative from Cubs fans, and I don’t get why. 1. Straight swap in the lineup between him and Tucker. KT > Belli 2. Lots of $ saved that can go to adding 3B/SP/RP 3. Busch + PCA will match his ‘24 production at 1B/CF (with more upside)

Moving Cam Smith REALLY hurts. having him and Shaw in the same infield w/ Swanson would have been amazing to watch. BUT, Kyle Tucker makes that team so much better. Swapping Paredes with Tucker makes the offensive ceiling so much higher. Still need a 3B, should be priority #1 going forward.

Another R5 Draft guy I think makes an impact next year: Cooper Bowman. Still only 25. Can play all over in the IF and spent 33 games in CF. Really good in AA (138 wRC+, 35 SB’s), but struggled in AAA. Could end up being a plus bat in a utility role in Cincinnati.

Gage Workman: 1. Put together a really solid ‘24 in AA (18 HR’s, 30 SB’s, 140 wRC+ in 126 games) 2. Fills an organizational positional need IF they trade one of their young CIF’s (Smith, Shaw) in a Tucker deal. Could end up being a savvy, low risk bargain out of the Rule 5 Draft for the Cubs.

My guess is that one of (or even both) Alexander Canario or Luis Vasquez is heading to Cleveland in return for Eli Morgan. Both are on the 40-man, Cubs need a spot for Morgan, and both are looking for a career revival in with a new team.
