This year's art exhibition will be based on our stained-glass window! Submissions for art work open on Monday 2nd May and close on Sunday 3rd August. You can visit the 16th century courtroom to view the window in person to get inspired.

We have a student from University of Kent doing a work placement with us currently. Isabelle has been exploring our collections, starting with the Roman Head.

On this day, 80 years ago, conflict in Europe ceased after war had raged on for six years. The fighting continued in other parts of the world, but the 8th May 1945 saw the surrender of German military operations and became known as Victory in Europe Day, or VE Day. #VEDay80 #VEDay

This talk complements the exhibition ‘Leave to Land’, curated by @drcweissenberg.bsky.social which uses memoirs, photos, official documents to illustrate the lives of the refugees who came to Sandwich. It is on display from now until Sunday 18th May.

On Sundays, we work with the collection. (As well as on Fridays and Saturdays) Today we came across this postcard showing Strand Street in 1873. We think the Hovis sign is very apt! 🥪

We may have been closed for a few weeks but we have been doing some important work, particularly ensuring the museum is looking especially shiny for the new year! We're now open as normal, Wednesday to Sunday, 10am to 4pm so please do come and visit us.

Artefact of the week: Edward Briden created this stained glass window in 1946. He made it from fragments of stained glass from bombed church windows after WWII, subsequently preserving and appreciating the art that was destroyed by the war. #museum #museumobject

We did it! (Well, you did actually) We’re only a small museum so 1,000 people is a lot to us. Museums and the all the people that work in or with them are wonderful. What an incredibly supportive community. Thank you!

📣 Christmas opening times! 📣 As December is right around the corner, we thought we should share our Christmas opening times. The museum is open everyday as normal, Wednesday to Sunday, 10am to 4pm up until Friday 20th December. The museum will then reopen on Wednesday 8th January.

A better question might be what image do we have to alter gradually to encourage you to follow us?

What does Sandwich, a town in Kent, have to do with Great Yarmouth, a town in Norfolk? During the Middle Ages, Portsmen from the Cinque Ports would exercise their right to "den and strond" by travelling to the banks of the river Yare and setting up camp for what became an annual Herring Fair.
