Disabled people live under constant surveillance, not for safety, but for judgement. Strangers comment on mobility aids. Professionals question pain, weight, movement, or how symptoms “should” look. Benefits systems scrutinise every gesture.

Disabled people shouldn’t have to be the most knowledgeable person in the room just to receive basic care. We’re forced to explain our conditions to professionals who should already understand them. We correct misinformation. We advocate for treatments. We challenge assumptions.

Home repairs shouldn’t be a barrier but for many disabled people, they are. Tradespeople who won’t communicate accessibly. Services that only take phone calls. Appointments offered with no notice, no flexibility, no understanding of access needs.

Disaster communication isn’t effective if it isn’t accessible. Emergency alerts that rely on sound alone. Evacuation instructions with no captions, no plain language, no alternative formats. Websites that crash, videos without BSL, maps impossible to read with screen readers.

All it took was a move - I moved between neighbouring counties to look after an elderly relative, and was told there was no transfer process for care at all, I’d have to start again, and that I wasn’t allowed to even ask new county before physically moved in! Still waiting a year on.

And that's all after the months of waiting, being put on hold, having to answer every unknown number so that you get the date of an assessment that you can't reschedule and are punished if you can't make. The waiting pushes people into a survival state, which deepens depression and anxiety responses

Disabled people are expected to “cope” even when we’re drowning. We mask pain so we’re not dismissed. We downplay symptoms so we’re not labelled dramatic. We act calm during crises because services respond faster to paperwork than to people.

Losing support isn’t an inconvenience. It’s a shock to the system. One phone call. One reassessment. One budget cut. And suddenly the care, equipment, or access you relied on is gone with no warning, no transition, no plan. You’re left scrambling to stay safe.

Disabled adults aren’t children, but society often treats us like we are. People speak to us in baby voices. Decisions are made for us, not with us. Professionals talk to carers instead of addressing us directly. Our boundaries are ignored. Our autonomy is questioned.

People love to say disability equipment is “free.” It isn’t. Not even close. You wait months sometimes years for assessments. You fight through gatekeeping and paperwork. You’re offered the cheapest option, not the one that actually meets your needs.

Language justice means more than translation. It means power, dignity, and equal access. When services only operate in one language, people are shut out of healthcare, benefits, legal rights, and community life.

Eugenics never disappeared. It just learned to speak more politely. It shows up in policies that decide whose lives are “too expensive.” In healthcare that withholds treatment based on assumptions about “quality of life.”

Accessibility isn’t a niche add‑on for disabled people. It’s a design principle that makes life better for everyone. Ramps help wheelchair users and parents with prams, travellers with luggage, delivery workers.

Disability justice isn’t just about access. It’s about power, liberation, and collective survival. It says disabled people, especially those who are Black, brown, queer, poor, or marginalised deserve more than ramps and policies. We deserve safety. We deserve community.
