Last night had 132 moths of 53 species in and around the trap; prettiest definitely the Orache and the flashiest the Common Emerald

Love of the Common People in the moth trap last night. Normally there’s two or three “Common”s, but last night was ten, amongst 46 total species within 122 moths there was the Common Footman, Grass-veneer, Lutestring, Marble, Pug, Common Swift, Wainscot, Wave and White Wave. #teammoth #mothsmatter

The most interesting thing in the moth trap last night was a wasp - an Enicospilus wasp to be precise. The larvae of these wasps feed on moth caterpillars, and the adults, like most moths, are nocturnal. The weird and wonderful, invisible world happening in our front garden…

Pick of the moth trap this morning were a Peppered moth and a Silver Y - a new species for me and, when I uploaded it, for iRecord it would appear.

After replacing sheep with free-roaming cattle, 5x as many butterflies were recorded, and 2x as many species, due to the increased floral diversity. Interesting stuff. But unless stocking densities are *extremely* low, cattle are an ecological disaster too. www.bbc.com/news/article...

Where did ten years just go?

Discussion with youngest, who objected to seeds in some grapes. I pointed out that seedless grapes would be gone in one generation if left to their own devices, and so not as nature intended, which led him to ask the intriguing question “if a grape doesn’t have a seed, is it even a fruit?”
