Niagara-on-the-Lake today for “Heartbreak House” at the Shaw Festival. Set in an Edwardian country house, Shaw’s rarely produced play uses the house and its crazy, dysfunctional occupants as a metaphor for the disintegration of European society on the eve of WWI. /1

Off to pick up friends in Oakville then heading to Niagara on-the-Lake for “Heartbreak House” at the Shaw Festival and dinner at a winery.

Today was my day to be out all day and get Chester’s contented sigh and loving cuddles when I got home, as James did Monday night. Chester may have his favourite, but if so, he never shows it. #DailyChester

Did I steal a Freezie from the Sunday School stash? Yes I did. “Haven’t you read what David did when he and his companions were hungry? He entered the house of God, and he and his companions ate the consecrated bread—which was not lawful for them to do.” This was just the church freezer.

As Canada Day winds to a close, Chester no longer “stands on guard”, but he will keep an eye on the city while lying down. #DailyChester

As an Anglophile and Downton lover I was pleasantly surprised to learn that much of the original drafting of the British North America act that resulted in the Dominion of Canada on July 1, 1867, was carried out Highclere Castle (TV’s Downton Abbey) facilitated by the Earl of Carnarvon.

Regarding the Matthew Vines piece “I’m Gay. Not Queer. It Matters”, all I will say is that it’s one thing to identify yourself on a spectrum; it’s another thing to deny that spectrum entirely or to demonize other parts of it. It is why I have no time for “LGB (not T)” advocates and allies. /1

James took Chester to the vet today for his updated vaccinations. He is up 1 lb since his last visit. I think he’s getting a few too many treats. #DailyChester

Before Mamdani became mayor of NYC, MAGA screamed that he would bring in Sharia Law, forcing his religion on others. Meanwhile southern states are enforcing the reading of the Bible in public schools. But it’s the Muslim socialist who is threatening democratic freedom. Sure.

Jamil Jivani is a Conservative Ontario MP . His post censoring the PM for attending Toronto Pride in a country that upholds the legality of same sex marriage and the protection of LGBTQ+ rights, shows how the Conservatives would gladly change that, given the chance. They must not have that chance.

Fighting for kids to receive state-mandated Bible instruction while fighting against those same kids receiving free lunch is exactly the kind of religious hypocrisy Christians should stand against. This is what it looks like to take the Lord’s name in vain.

Joining my UK friends in their misery this week - albeit with better air conditioning. Low 30s all week (feeling like 40 C/ 104 F with humidity). I loathe this kind of weather.

I don’t really do a lot of Pride events. Not into large crowds especially in baking heat. BUT nothing underscores Pride’s importance more than someone attending for the first time, telling me, with tears and a smile, how incredible it is to celebrate publicly what they’d always hid in shame 🌈

Thousands marched with rainbow flags in Budapest, Hungary after the fall of Viktor Orban. Many anti-LGBTQ laws remain but after last year’s attempt to ban Pride, it was allowed to happen, giving the community and allies cautious hope of further change. Pride is not just victory but vigilance.

Chester’s favourite toy has to be his London Double-Decker Bus stuffie. He chases it (when we throw it), it makes agonizingly loud squeaks and it’s soft to lie on. He has a lot of fun toys but his Bus is the one he always goes back to. #DailyChester

Lovely message this morning on our church email. I remember speaking with this person on Twitter a number of times as they discerned a call to ministry in a different denomination while navigating various issues. When I was kicked off Twitter I lost so many connections. Was so happy to hear this

One of the things that never fails to extremely annoy me on Bluesky… is when you post about something that happened to you… And then people who weren’t there impose their own interpretation and explanation of the event, in full disregard of everything you said about it…even though you WERE THERE.

Jesus said “I came not to bring peace but a sword”. He was speaking of the divisive nature of his message - allegiance to God and God’s ways taking precedence over all other allegiances - even of our closest human relationships.

I think we Christians need to spend less time quoting scripture (out of any context) in our bios posting about how Christ is King and how we love all Gods people ….and more time actually living as Christ and actively demonstrating that love. I am tired of the “bio Christians”.

To all celebrating the Solstice whether Summer (north) or Winter (south) may this time of shifting daylight, the waxing or waning of the sun and the reminder of the ever-turning wheel of time, bless you with time to pause, rest and give thanks for abundance in creation’s beauty and in human love. 🙏🏼

Well, one person - a visitor I wasn’t familiar with - got up during my sermon and left. He seemed to be fine with everything I was saying until I mentioned “white supremacy” and he was up like a shot and out the back door. I think that tells me more about him than it does my sermon.

Well, I didn’t walk out this time. I have come to an appreciation of the intense choreography and the elaborate production values. I still never want to see it again. But bravo to the company. (Not your fault I absolutely hate dystopian narrative)
