This is awesome! I’ve never seen this before!

Someone on the team has mention that twig is a giant bird. A realization I haven’t made through all of production. Gameplay programmer James Collins and the animation team has done an amazing job bringing Twig’s flight to life!

It was super fun to talk with @ashleyesqueda.com about MMoJ!! A game and team truly near and dear to my heart. I really appreciate everyone that's worked on the game, and everyone that has played it! For folks I manage, I promise I won't draw brocollis on your next performance review.

I saw so much joy coming from this team as they were developing this game. And it really comes across in this very joyous game. It was one of the first DF games my kids were able to play and helped us through the early times of the pandemic. Amazing job on this game DFHAT team!!!

25 years!! I joined the studio when it was 2 years young and I feel so grateful to have a place where I’ve met and worked with so many wonderful people. Thanks to @timoflegend.bsky.social and many others who worked so hard over the years to keep the doors open making games we are excited to make.

I am so very thankful for folks that have played the game and enjoyed it. We toiled so very hard to make this very precious thing to us…It fills my heart to know that it was precious to others as well.

20 years ago we released Psychonauts. It was so very hard to make. Towards the finish line I wasn’t thinking about how well the game will received but that we got to do it…we got to finish it….there were so many obstacles in the way that the finish was in doubt. We did it. It went out to the world.

Ending GDC week feeling inspired by my colleagues and fellow devs and amazed by the enthusiasm and ingenuity of new devs.

Starting GDC morning listening to a talk about entity systems and memory allocation while super interesting feels like sprinting before warming up!

Just got back from day of the devs and it’s very inspiring to see devs demoing their work. I saw some amazing games and being able to chat with the devs is a joy.

Ah, a blast from the past about a game that's near and dear to my heart. It was a joy working with this team and I love what we created together.

optimist: the cup is half full pessimist: the cup is half empty game programmer: Will the character ever not have the cup? Can they just have it all the time? What? They're going to hand off the cup to another character? wait wait...how about if it happens off screen? Cover it with effects?

One of the most triumphant feelings you get in game dev is fixing a really tricky bug that’s taken a long time to figure out. And after it happens you HAVE to tell someone…in great detail. I can’t explain it but I’ve seen most programmers do this.

This is one of my most favorite bug, what was dubbed as The Crappening from Headlander. (did you name it that @leepetty.bsky.social or @5palmtechnique.bsky.social ?) This is a spawner that broke that kept spawning on tick without stopping and it would eventually run out of memory.

Folks, there’s something inherently funny when you play an animation on the wrong character rig. It’s amazing.

During the credits for a game I want to see a reel of outtakes like from Jackie Chan movies where there is a parade of injuries, except it’s funny game breaking bugs.

Having spent 21 years in one place I'll steadily become the old cranky dev in the corner muttering "used to use lua back in my day" "we made that before, and it ran on a ps-two" "we used to use video tapes to record bugs from a CRT TV!" , then they'll just tuck me in for a nap.

This month marks 22 years in the game industry (and 21 at Double Fine). Some unsolicited advice I'd give to folks early in their career is don't be too pre-occupied w/ WHAT you make, but HOW you make it and HOW you collaborate with others. Having joy in creation is what you'll carry with you.

Picturing a game jam where you use a specialized game engine to make something completely different. Murder Mystery adventure game using the Forza Engine. A garden sim using the nba 2k engine. And so on….

It’s a strange experience in 2024 to be scrolling on a site and not get advertised at. It’s refreshing but slightly unnerving.

Conversely there are things that I get so incredibly impressed by. When props are handed from one character to another without a pop, the part in Spider-Man where Peter and harry walk up the stairs and gameplay and their feet match every step! That rope tech in The Last of Us.

Once again can’t turn off dev brain when playing games. I do wonder if folks that aren’t in game dev notice things like animation pops, dialog cutting off, feet sliding and imprecise collision as much. Or they do and devs are mainly trained to look for them as bugs and most folks don’t mind it.

Something that’s felt really broken this election cycle even more so than before is the media landscape where folks got facts and the news. No matter what we do when what is real is in question I don’t know how we get different results. How does this change?
