The incarceration of Japanese Americans began with language that painted entire communities as threats. My family lived through it. We should all be alarmed when politicians once again test how far fear and mass detention can go. If we don’t confront it now, history will repeat itself.

The SAVE Act makes it harder for millions of Americans to vote. Now, it’s being loaded with unrelated attacks on transgender Americans. This bill is a threat to basic rights and a distraction from real issues facing Americans like the price of gas.

Democrats are clear: rein in ICE and restore accountability. At the same time, we’ve put forward multiple bills to fund TSA and keep travelers safe. Republicans have blocked them every time. We can do both—protect security and uphold our values.

Californians are already feeling the impacts of Trump’s efforts to throw out climate protections. A water reservoir is below capacity, which puts pressure on our water supply and has serious consequences for millions.

Republicans would rather send ICE agents to intimidate travelers and force TSA workers to go weeks without pay than support basic accountability, like requiring warrants to enter homes or ending masked enforcement.

Mohommad Nazeer Paktyawal fought alongside US troops in Afghanistan. After trusting America enough to rebuild his life here with his wife and six children, he died less than 24 hours after being detained by ICE. His family deserves answers.
