A special bird, the muscular power of the Goshawk can now be seen over woods in north Norfolk, pushing up into new territories away from its traditional Breckland stronghold.

A tale of two toads. NWT Syderstone Common hosting its famous natterjack and, more numerous, common toads. A youngish yellow striper and an adult warthog.

A short-eared owl today at St Benet’s Abbey in the Broads. Good scope views of the Black-winged kite perched, hovering and flying at Hickling, over20 cranes and a few groups of whoopers.

An overcast twitch into my homeland of Essex brightened by a very elegant smew- one male and three females to be precise. Not often in Norfolk these days.

A good day out with Bloomers: this smart pintail and a return to the eastern black redstart, alongside a lot of geese, 3 glossy ibis, 3 great northern divers, and a superb bittern at Cley.

Digging out my new pond today, I unearthed 5 May Bug larvae in less than 2 cubic metres of soil. I’m sure they were Jon Pertwee’s adversary in a 70s Doctor Who!

27/16 but a good crop. Clancy’s Rustic NFG, a beautiful Merveille du Jour, Sallow and Orange Sallow all NFY2 feathered thorns, 3 black rustics and 4 green-brindled crescents added some very nice colour.

woeful 15/13 last night but some NFYs in form of brown-spot pinion and mallow, one NFG meal moth and, from Sunday, a very late rosy footman.

You know times are a bit thin when I’m posting (albeit large-ish) NFY micros (yellow belle and golden triangle),a nice shot of a ruby tiger and another pale eggar. It seems like everyone else is plucking Clifden Nonpareils off fences and walls!

A whimbrel dropped into North Point near Wells yesterday for a refuel and a wash-and-brush-up, en route from breeding grounds in the north to winter on the coast in West Africa or maybe Portugal. This charismatic bird was soon hustling southwards leaving behind the echo of its high, whinnying call.

A very brown trap this morning- mostly SHCs and wainscots plus rustic allsorts. 7 pale eggars was a record and a bit of zinnia colour brought out the best in mother of pearl and burnished brass.
