Carbon, Capture, & Storage is not really something for oil & gas producers (other than storage infrastructure). The ones who need CCS the most, like cement, steel, waste, etc, are not the oil & gas industry (in case you had not noticed).

This survey from 2009 is really a wild read. Most climate scientists surveyed thought 4-5C by end of century was the most likely, and that 2C was close to impossible to achieve. Imagine the results if you took this exact survey again today....

âJust five rich global north countries are responsible for the majority (51%) of planned new oil and gas extraction to 2050: the US, Canada, Australia, Norway and the UK. These countries have the responsibility to move first to phase out fossil fuel production.â

How can we build a broad coalition for climate action and bring about the massive political movement needed? 1. Focus on planting a seed of desire for a post carbon world. 2. Avoid doom and fear narratives. 3. Avoid narratives of sacrifice or degrowth. 4. Avoid blaming, shaming, or finger pointing.

Just revisiting this interview with Dr Saleemul Huq, recorded in March 2022. I think he shows quite well how gross it can be sometimes when white people dismiss COP as a total irrelevancy, when it is still a valuable place to fight these battles on loss, damage, adaptation and accountability.

Just 1% of global population are regular flyers; they represent 50% of climate pollution from flights. (That was me until 2012!) For regular flyers, it's the biggest slice of your climate footprint. How to start flying less personally, at work, collectively:

Probably the least surprising but perhaps still the most egregious / shameless is their net zero claims being 100% "net" and 0% "zero" All these offsets come from questionable projects, too - some worse than others.

This is a tacit acknowledgement that offsets aren't a generous gift from corporations to climate action: they are a trade. The company pays a fee, and they get to scribble out as much of their climate responsibility as they please.
