I’ve uploaded the first novel I ever wrote to AO3! I wrote it many years ago now, but I’m still very pleased with it. I’m just back from a great week in Belgium and the Netherlands, taking in some beautiful sights, eating some fine (and sometimes rather unhealthy!) food, and visiting some really wonderful people. I’m reminded of just how nice travelling can be 🙂

A little experiment to try out formats for uploading poetry!

This was the hardest thing I’ve ever drawn. Along with the accompanying novella, it was made in the month following my partner’s death, as I struggled to process what had happened. It’s amazing to think it’s been seven years now. Such a long time, and yet somehow almost no time at all.

Uh oh. “Your ship is unable to land on Earth. The planet’s environment is too hostile.” I respect a game that actively allows bad things to happen, based on player choices. It’s particularly bold in this case, because this scenario is actually *required* in order to win. I never found originally.

There’s something beautiful about old books. As I’m working on some right now, here’s one from a collection I manage: a book of printed music, over 800 pages in length, gilt edged, compiled in 1887. Books like these are vital for preserving music; much in here has been unpublished for many decades.

While I do lot of work in computation and digital media, I still find it really helpful to sketch out ideas with pencil and paper. That’s particularly true when I’m brainstorming, be it theoretical concepts, plans, or mathematical proofs. Many of my sketch pages are based around diagrams!

In Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Blue Rescue Team, I have a high-level Linoone that can legitimately use a STAB Hyper Beam. That took a *lot* of grinding, and many trips to Buried Relic to bash/phase through walls!

“Venusaur's flower is said to take on vivid colours if it gets plenty of nutrition and sunlight.” This is an old character study, drawn on a long train journey!

Well, I guess this was probably going to happen eventually!

The Brok t-shirt haul is here! Now I can be a nanotech Doc wearing a nanotech Doc! Atomic computers are effectively nanites, right? Even better, it’s timed beautifully with the release of the new Brok story ‘Natal Tail’ – complete with *VN engine*! Thanks @cowcatgames.com. You’re a legend!

I’ve stumbled onto a long, elaborate musical work in praise of Neptune, dating from the early 1700s! Classical imagery was popular at that time, but a work of this scale dedicated to a particular God is unusual. I’m just typing it out now. I look forward to seeing what it’s like!

I’ve always found the Phoenix to be such a striking symbol. It’s one that’s stuck with me, inspiring some of my art. When all seems lost, out of the ashes can arise not just survival and more of the same, but new growth, new opportunities, and even wonderful things. It’s such a powerful idea.

The US survived Trump. Brazil survived Bolsonaro — during a pandemic no less. Argentina will survive Milei. America, and the world, will survive Trump a second time, and we will outlive this wave of incompetent fascists. Politicians are not as powerful as they want you to believe.

*Narcissus* (1/7) They say that our greatest fears are of monsters, creatures under our beds, shadows lurking at night, the hands of the felon, the bomb out of sight, the greed of the few, the madness of power, the chaos that withers our plans ‘fore they flower.

I think it’s a shame that illustrations in fiction have gone out of fashion. Far from being childish, or an impediment, I think they’re a great way to inject colour into a narrative, and to help envision a world. Here are two fine pieces by the superb Tim Kirk, from ‘Swordships of Scorpio’ (1973).

Almost all of my art is made entirely digitally. That’s because I’m afraid of sketching! I assume I’m awful at it. But every time I do sketch, it feels much better than I expect. I should really sketch more! (Even if I make a mistake, and don’t give myself room to finish on only 1 page, haha.)

A rewarding way to spend a Saturday: ‘Spem in alium', the motet for 40 singers (8 choirs of 5 singers each), written by Thomas Tallis in the late 1500s. Singing music in this many parts is a rare treat, and requires a lot of intense concentration from all involved. It’s absolutely worth it!

Imagination and invention are such an important part of the human experience. It’s so easy to fall into the trap of thinking of them as childish things, to be put away with the toy trains and teddybears as we become real, serious adults. But, if we do that, I feel we lose something very precious!
