I remastered, re-lettered, rewrote and old comic just to see if I could. In making things a bit less transgressive, I think I got closer to the heart of the story I wanted to tell. Completely free on itch

Citizen Sleeper (XSX) Everyday I looked at the hand I was dealt and tried to play it to the best of my ability to keep my failing body moving. I bit my lip and crossed my fingers hoping the moves I was making would be enough, would make it in time. Other left, but I stayed. Ohh... yes, the game.

Wario Land (GB) I don't think I have beat it since I was a kid. Masterpiece. In the voice of an Irish SF podcaster, "It's a game about a fat lad who can't run very fast or jump very high, and you'll never believe this, he's greedy." I joke, but the game is so much defined by being NOT Mario.

Flintlock the Siege of Dawn (PS5) Not as memorable as the team's previous game Ashen (because that one was super weird), but also a way more polished experience. Though also what feel like an unfinished one. There just aren't enough weapons / items to feel like you can make more than one build.

Dr. Sleep (2019) Long overdue. That it survives the impossible task of following The Shinning and has enough moments that are distinctly its own makes this a success. All the things that King frequently uses about the terrors "out there" and "in here" still have the power to get under my skin.

Yellow Taxi Goes Vroom (STM) When it apes Mario 64 or its level or precision platforming the controls and camera just aren't up to the task. When it tries its own thing and lets me zip and boost around a level discovering paths forward it is a delight. Fortunately more of the latter than the former.

I say this with zero irony: if you are even tangentially a part of a retro video game community, it is your civic duty to push back against this company and shun anyone who doesn't. This is fascism tapping gently at the door and as soon as you let it in, it's going to invite its friends.

From Hell: I could have sworn I had read this. I had not. I had seen images of it in comic shop catalogs in the 90s. I had seen it on other's book shelves. I had probably bounced of the dense line work and glacial pacing if I ever tried picking it up. Now those things are what I love about the book.

Lot of shit things happened this year but on the other hand I just scared my cat laughing after suddenly remembering that Fat Joe tried to claim the Taliban both took a day off when michael jackson died and were shown on CNN solemnly body popping in his memory.

Maison Ikkoku vol 1: Solidifies that this is my favorite of Takahashi's works. The Rom-Com beats land with me more in this grounded story. I enjoyed they way all generations and romantic statuses are weaved into the main plot. People! They want you to find love but they ALSO want to torment you.

Final Vendetta (STM) Nothing flashy, but incredibly polished. Some painstaking animation and sprite work that only suffer because it came out in the modern brawler era. Your foes mostly get you by surrounding you, but that I can see them flanking me in a way that feels natural is kind of amazing.

Invincible (S1-3) The 1st season is SLOW, especially since it has been memed to death. But the 2nd and 3rd which grapple with the 1st's never ending fallout do a lot to keep me on the hook. My favorite character being the hard nosed head of Global Defense sure says something about my current outlook

VWestlife has been putting in the deadpan delivery work for old tech heads like myself. Please enjoy this video he made highlight an old piece of video gear I used from 1999 until the early 2010s.

Donkey Kong Bananza (SW2) Super fun in the moment to moment but cannot sustain itself in the long term. Everything that is a blast in the first level becomes routine by the end. It's a hard call, do you spice things up or do you let the experience remain something you casually chip away at?

PYPY - Sacred Times: Synth laced garage psychedelia. The kind of music that feels enough like an occult ritual that it can still hit me when little else can. Shadows cast by strobe lights climbing up the empty church walls music.

Providence: I feared Burrows' art would cause me to bounce of the work, but in time I came to appreciate the labor that went into telling a story composed almost entirely of conversations. There' a good portion of the work I could do without. But rarely have I felt so on the ground / in the moment.

Virtua Fighter 4 Evo (PS2) This is where the series took a turn to being more reactive and expressive in the play over the high speed guessing game of VF1-3. Just that little touch of being able to cancel from one move to another connects you so much more to your fighter. Still looks great too.
