“Not news like this, ma’am!” He says boisterously, taking the generous dollars and quickly stuffing them in his pocket before she can take them back. Crutchie smiles innocently, handing over the paper and making up a completely fake headline. “The whole Rockefeller mansion burned down overnight!”

He sniffs loudly. Maybe extra loudly. “I… I jus’ wanna see Jack again. An’ Specs. And Romeo! And everybody… can we visit them? You promise?”

He quirks a brow. “If I do, will ya promise never to rob me ever again?”

“You look like you might need the news, that’s all,” he says quite boldly, shifting his weight to show off his crutch. Will he risk a cough? Crutchie coughs, reaching into his bag to show the woman a newspaper. “Would ya buy one from a poor, orphaned boy?”

“I hope so,” Crutchie whispers, and finally approaches the blanket. He tears it away. Nothings there. Maybe there’s really just ghosts here.

Crutchie nods, not bothering to tell her he’d been on the streets for a while before this. Not Gotham, though. No. New York. Still… “Thanks,” Crutchie spits in his hand and extends it to the other. “I never told ya. I’m Crutchie.”

The train whistle blows. Crutchie buries his face in Esme’s chest. “I — I’m sorry I ran away… maybe I ain’t cut out for a family….”

Buy a newspaper, miss?

“B-b-but he said — he said you was in love! An’ — an’ that ring on your — I only got in the way!” Crutchie breaks down then, sobbing. “I miss Jack. I wanna go home!”

Crutchie sits on the far end of the platform, glancing around numerous times to make sure no one sees him.

Yeah. I’m part of the mafia now. I’m a big shot. (lies lies lies)

“Yes!” Crutchie lies, exasperated. “I’m in the mafia, and — and I stole a SUPER important thing from the boss, so now I’m running away before they get me so I don’t sleep with the fishes!!”

. . . . . (Squeaks in terror.)
