Oh no! It keeps happening. Practicing the Blender to Unreal animation pipeline. The morphs put a weird triangle on the back for some reason. Other than that, all good! Gotta be glute-dominant to be a racer!

Starting my journey as an Shorts-making dev. Share any tips you have for setting up Unreal projects so that the player's pc doesn't take off as soon as they launch it.

Oh god, I'm gonna be sick. I switched my Steam install from snap to deb so that the Steam Deck DevKit Client would work. I have Blender through Steam so I don't have to check for updates. Blender defaulted to saving everything in the snap directory, which is now gone.

Having my pc power going through a KILL-A-WATT has been informative. It really helps tune my graphics settings. It's an earlier sign of performance leeches than fans spinning up or frame rate issues. The difference in power draw between Windows and Ubuntu was fun to look at.

I am so checked out from AI that it took until now for me to see the Claude logo. That is an anus.

"Game dev is one of those jobs you only do when you really want to. It's not going to make your parents proud, you're unlikely to get rich in an industry that lays off people for making superhits, and its a demanding & confrontative job. Why would you let a machine do the thing you're here to do?"

As a former VR R&D dev, this sort of thing is an industry killer. It's why it took Apple a decade to make a movie-watching viewfinder. Protect the open web and open mobile from mandatory ID registration for every app developer.

I was digging through old discords while working on my CV when I found the behind the scenes clips I wanted to use for a previous Throwback Thursday.

Just saw a Gemini ad in which it formatted a student's citations for her. The funny thing is, if one were to use a proper reference manager, like Mendeley, it would take longer to give Gemini the context than to press the generate button in the manager.

I am making a big structural change to the core of my game's build system to fix a replication bug. Lots of slow boring work with nothing to show off. So here are some teasers of some logic components from my old Blender scratch file.

Some desync issues gave me a peek at how the server communicates client positions back to them. Based on this teleportation trick, it would seem the server is like, "You are standing at this point on this thing." But the client was confused about where the thing was.

The lasers are now configurable and can be driven by wire signals. Here is one set up with the extent of pistons driving the R,G,B, and intensity channels. Color is normalized and the intensity multiplied by the largest of the channels or average to avoid "dark light."

Dismantling is functional! I'll change the colors and UI so it is not so blatantly ripping off Satisfactory. It took a little bit to resolve how I have the physics set up. My strategy has been to solve the big problems first. Another one down!

Stencil buffer highlighting! Just using grab as a trigger to test it for now. In the near future it will be used for highlighting multi-selected parts for disassembly (ripping off Satisfactory), and in the far future for blueprinting.

The logic system is shaping up. Here I show how parameters from one part can drive another and I/O can be assigned by channel, even creating cascades through the system.

I'm working on a game about building wacky contraptions. Today I prototyped a wiring system for transferring state between parts. This little demo shows the motor speed being driven by the extension of the piston. This is the start of big things.

"And he remembers also that every rational animal is his kinsman, and that to care for all men is according to man's nature." -M. A. Meditations Cooperation is humanity's survival super power. Go further than "love thy neighbor." The neighborhood is a rather small circle. It's just not good enough.

As game developers, entertainers, or artists we have the awesome power and responsibility of shaping the zeitgeist and thus history. Jeff Foxworthy convinced his audience that surgeons and nuclear physicists were not smarter than 5th graders. Ron Swanson made Libertarianism quirky and cool.

I believe the ratio of trained problem solvers and problem finders is off. We start problem solving in primary school but training in problem finding is only found in college. Problem triage is nowhere to be found. This is how you get tech bubbles, immense yet aimless talent solving non-problems.

Geeking out about the soroban and 5*2 base counting. With this, you can do operations up to values of 100 on your fingers, using the fingers as the 1s, thumbs as the 5s, and second hand as the 10s column. Counting systems like this make it a lot more obvious how we arrived at the electronic computer

The research says social media is bad for our brains. I left, but now begrudgingly I am back. Shortform media is now the locus of attention and power. To stay out is to neglect the moral imperative to spread good. So take a break if needed. But don't give up on sharing your good with the world.
