The two bills the House passed last night serve only to criminalize poverty and erode trust between law enforcement and the communities they serve. The Senate must vote these bills down and reject this blatant attack on DC’s local autonomy. Congress has no right to drag us backward.

This is unacceptable. As DC struggles to find money in our budget to keep our affordable housing commitments, DHCD gave back federal tax credits that could have created $35M in funding to house thousands of residents.

It was a beautiful day to celebrate the opening of the Metropolitan Branch Trail from Fort Totten to Takoma! The Metropolitan Branch Trail is more than just a bike path -- it connects us to each other, to schools and work and recreation, and to a vibrant alternative to sitting in traffic.

Nearly 200,000 DC residents have served in our Armed Forces since World War I, despite being denied local autonomy and voting representation in Congress.   On #VeteransDay, we honor these brave servicemembers and reinforce our calls for #DCStatehood.

This morning, I asked my colleagues if the executive could guarantee no federal involvement in enforcing a youth curfew. The answer was no. With armed troops occupying DC and targeting Black and brown youth, we cannot create more opportunities for harm by federal forces we have no power to oversee.

Today, DC took a huge step toward combating poverty across the District.   We just passed an amendment that will deliver real cash relief to working families through the EITC and Child Tax Credit — two of our most powerful tools to lift families out of poverty.

Starting Friday, 12/12, DCPL will start renovating the Petworth Library to make room for a new teen center, upgrade windows and flooring, & more.   📖 The project is part of $1.5M we secured in the DC budget to improve the library and better meet the needs of our community. 🧵

Last week, I sent a letter requesting DPR reopen Roosevelt, Dunbar, and Ballou pools, which have been closed since June. I’m happy to share the pools will reopen within the month! Thank you to Wards 4, 5, and 8 for advocating for the reliable access to DPR facilities residents deserve and pay for.

Help is on the way for families who rely on SNAP/WIC benefits to help feed their families: the DC Government will use $30 million in contingency funds to ensure benefits are paid in November despite the federal government shutdown.

Grateful to OAG for taking legal action to halt the Trump administration's suspension of SNAP assistance. Thousands of DC residents depend on SNAP to sustain their families and keep food on the table. Cutting off this critical support while other programs remain funded is cruel and unjust.

Today, the Council is voting on a last-minute amendment to the RENTAL Act — one that could strip rights from thousands of tenants living in 2-4 unit buildings.   When we exempted single-family units from TOPA, there was a 7-hour hearing with hundreds testifying. Tenants deserve no less now.
