The most heartbreaking patients at SR3 are the ones harmed directly by human actions. This could be entanglement, pupnapping, or in the case of a juvenile harbor seal that came into care this fall, gunshot wounds. Read more at

Most of our patients have graduated fish school and are competing for their meals with their fellow seals! This means they just have to reach a release weight of around 50 pounds before they can return to the ocean. Here we have Paparadelle, Vermicelli, and Udon striking poses.

It’s a sailing sea lion! Holding a flipper in the air might seem like concerning behavior, but it’s quite normal for sea lions as they regulate their temperature. Sea lions can’t put on a sweater on cold days or shorts on hot ones, so they raise their large flippers out of the water instead!

Did you know seals have toes and toenails? Most of each digit is built into their webbed flipper, but they do have visible nails 💅 When patients come to the Rescue Center, we always check their flippers for signs of injury. If we notice anything unusual, we can take a closer look through x-rays!
