Thank you to my colleagues on the Council for passing the budget in one night, to all the staff that worked so hard to put the budget together and make it transparent to the public. And finally, thanks to everyone who voted for the referendum.

Madison residents approved last year’s referendum because they value the important services their City government provides. We have an obligation to respond to that support by limiting property tax increases and continually finding efficiencies, and we are doing that.

The City of Madison is taking steps to help address the threat to community food security caused by the ongoing federal government shutdown and resulting lapse in FoodShare benefits. These include launching a food drive this week to collect donations for the Second Harvest Foodbank.

"Madison’s proposed budget for 2026 highlights the city’s financial turnaround, as the plan would increase staffing and service levels while limiting the city’s property tax increase to roughly the rate of inflation."

We need a diversity of homes, of all sizes and prices, so everyone has an opportunity to thrive in Madison. I want to thank my colleagues on the Council for continuing to work collaboratively on this important issue.

I'm grateful to Secretary Hyun and Governor Evers for their support of the Ready for Reuse program and for the Huxley Yards project.

The budget includes $1.7 million to support the new homeless shelter and funding for the Imagination Center. The budget also includes adding a 10th ambulance and nine new paramedics for the Madison Fire Department to address mounting call volume in the growing city.

I’m happy to announce that the tax rate increase in my 2026 budget proposal is the lowest in 40 years. The average value home will see property taxes increase by less than 3 dollars a month, or around 30 dollars a year.

This infill redevelopment project, facilitated by crucial funding from the state, is making it possible to clean up a site where contaminated soil has been a concern for years.

"Rhodes-Conway announced a third priority for new funding... a 10th ambulance for the Fire Department. Her budget would set aside $250k to fund both the ambulance and nine paramedics to staff it. The plan would fund a partial year of staffing since the positions would begin at the end of next year."

My 2026 Executive Operating Budget proposal has the lowest tax rate increase in at least 40 years. The City’s share of property taxes on the average valued home will go up by just $30 annually — below the inflation rate and nearly $5 million below the maximum allowed under the state’s levy limit.

ICE is stockpiling arms, including chemical weapons, guided missile warheads and explosive components. The spending dwarfs anything we've ever seen in the agency - a 700% increase. The President is building an army to attack his own country.

Most housing subsidies are not available to students, so we had to get creative to make sure that new student housing developments include affordable options.

The free tool helps Wisconsinites handle civil matters like removing an eviction from their record or reinstating a driver’s license without having to pay a lawyer.

A GOP bill would require Wisconsin communities to sign off on solar projects before they can proceed, while there’s no such law for factory farms. Go figure.

The responsibility for meeting the needs of residents who face homelessness cannot be solely laid at the feet of local government. The COVID-19 pandemic era showed us what is possible when federal, state and local leaders make a commitment to work together to face serious challenges.

As part of my 2026 Executive Operating Budget, I’m announcing an additional $320,000 towards library operations for the Imagination Center so that this great facility can open with a full complement of staff.

I want to reaffirm our commitment to making Madison a place that values equitable access to reproductive choice for all, including access to abortion services. Public Health can provide help finding abortion services, securing the funds needed for care, emergency contraception, and pregnancy support

I think Madison is a very compassionate community, I think that folks who live in Madison want to help people who are more vulnerable than them and might be experiencing homelessness or housing insecurity, and I think that it is a benefit to our entire community for us to take care of people.

The Imagination Center is one of my top priorities in 2026 because it’s an investment in one of the fastest growing parts of Madison. Libraries are the heartbeat of a healthy community. Every Madisonian deserves equal access to these important institutions.

Although it’s a challenging time in our country, what’s going to get us through it, is community and the way in which we take care of each other here in Madison.

Wisconsin spends about as much on homeless services as Madison does, and far less than Dane County. Despite multibillion dollar budget surpluses, the Legislature rejected again, without discussion, Gov. Evers’ request for $24 million to increase funding for homeless services at the state level.

I’ve been across Wisconsin holding town halls, and one thing I hear again and again is that people are deeply concerned about their healthcare premiums rising. The heat is on Republicans.

For 10 days now, President Trump and Republicans in Congress have shut down the federal government, risking healthcare for millions of Americans and refusing to work across the aisle to reach bipartisan support. This is reckless. End the shutdown now.

Madison is dedicating millions of dollars to support people experiencing homelessness and create affordable housing. We need the private sector, where historically the majority of homeless funding has come from – to invest in the services our most vulnerable community members need.
