A fantastic, engaging talk by @cmkwong.bsky.social last weekend on Hong Kong's WW2 experience! I don't like working on the weekend but having great talks like Chi Man's at our History Salon always makes me happy to come into work on Saturday afternoons.

This week's work with MHHK included finishing up the map of the 1920s and starting a new one on the 1840s as I continue to build out the starter kit. This has meant working with Adolphe Dubois de Jancigny's fantastic 1842 survey, which provides a very different profile of Hong Kong's shoreline.

I spoke about my new project on a HK-born Eurasian who grew up in Cornwall in 1900s & somehow got deported from UK for suspected 'brothel keeping' in 1937, focusing on the interactions she & her police father had with both sides of the law.

A nice surprise to wake up today to the news that Modern China in Flux is out online ahead of print, and that it's been made open access! Modern China in Flux collects essays that explore Chinese society through the underlying framework of network analysis, leveraging digital methods to do so.

Bristol-a home for the study of Hong Kong history since 2015. It all started with the generous support of the Hatton Trust 10 years ago. On Jan 16, we celebrated the 10th anniversary of the commencement of the journey with seminars, a tour to our Hong Kong Archives and reunion of friends.
