I spent last week in Sydney, giving a keynote on how to reduce recidivism (that should be online soon!) and then talking with a variety of researchers, practitioners, and lawmakers about what works to improve public safety. I whoeheartedly endorse this thread as I made the jump about 7 years ago and have no regrets, too. In fact, I would encourage people who are interested in policy work to think about non-academic positions. In times like these, the skills are valuable and necessary.

I loved being in London this week! There is so much energy there working toward evidence-based policy. As one person suggested, it may be that their smaller national budget makes them more focused on figuring out what works, so that they can use their (more) limited resources most effectively.

Excellent article by German Lopez for the NYT about a big, important problem in the US: Most crimes aren’t solved. If you murder someone, it’s essentially a coin flip whether you’ll be arrested for it. If you steal a car, you’ll almost certainly get away with it.

I'd love to fund studies of interventions that reduce real-time pollution exposure, in the US, on outcomes related to violence and criminal behavior. (There is strong evidence that such exposure increases violence in real time; the next question is how much interventions can mitigate this effect.)
