12 March 1687 #OTD Thornton's younger brother, Christopher Wandesford, was "buried at Kirklington, by [near] his ancestors." (Bk 1) That this is recorded near the back of Book 1, which elsewhere she mentions she was writing in 1669, shows that the book was written over a period of nearly 2 decades.

19 Feb. 1626 #OTD ‘Alice the daughter of Christopher Wandesford of Kirklington’ was baptised, as recorded in the parish register (now at NYCRO). According to Alice Thornton, writing later in life, she was baptised the day after she was born, i.e. on the 14th. #EarlyModern 📜 🗃️

31 Jan. 1667 #OnThisDay Alice Thornton's teen daughter, Nally, continued to be ill from smallpox: 'she fell blind, intermitting until the 5th of February, being exceedingly choked in her throat and could not swallow almost anything without a pipe for the smallpox and strait throat' (Bk 1). 🗃️

30 Jan. 1648 #OTD Charles I was beheaded. Thornton wrote: 'cruelly murdered by the hands of blasphemous rebels…Let his admirable book speak his Eternal Glory and praise, the best of kings…that ever this Earth had' (Bk 1). 25 Jan. 1667 #OTD Alice Thornton's 13-year-old daughter, Nally, took medicine to try and stave off smallpox, the day after Thornton's son, Robert, recovered. Nally succumbed to the illness the next day, although she recovered the following month. #EarlyModern 🗃️

20. Dec. 1668 #OTD Thornton received Communion, while ill in bed after her husband's death 3 months earlier: 'it pleased God to give me this opportunity to receive the blessed Sacrament — with my daughter Comber and my son, and Hannah and some of hers... which was in my chamber' (Bk 3, 163). 🗃️

17 Dec. 1651 #OTD Alice Thornton wrote to her new mother-in-law, Elizabeth Gates, enclosing a pair of garters for her sisters-in-law which “I desire my sisters do me the honour to wear”. The two who are mentioned in Thornton's Books are Elizabeth Denton and Frances Portington. #EarlyModern 🗃️

16 Dec. 1726 #OTD Katherine Danby, Alice Thornton’s daughter, was buried at Stonegrave. Just two of Alice’s nine children outlived her, Alice Comber (Nally) and Katherine (Kate). Katherine lived the longest, dying at age 70. #EarlyModern 🗃️

In Alice's will, made in 1705, she left her wedding ring to her oldest daughter with the stipulation that it should then be passed down the Comber line with other Wandesford family heirlooms. Her younger daughter received her 'wedding bodice and crimson stomacher of flowered satin'. #EarlyModern 🗃️
