whats crazy is that the biggest progress in someones art doesnt come from any big release and it comes from stuff like organizing things or working on your relationships or becoming a better, more reliable person. thats the kind of development most people dont look at (and it hinders them)

i just kinda realized that i dont have any dreams or hopes or ambitions or whatever because im depressed, and that just kills any of that stuff lol. sucks to do things when you have an illness like that but atp i can do what i want to do so thats progress

responses to this post are interesting to me because when i asked this ten years ago, most people said they want to play huge shows and change the world with their art. today most people seem to just want to make things and be left alone. i think its good either way, but never be afraid to aim high

more than ever right now making raw art from the heart without any major commercial incentive is an incredibly important thing to be doing. do NOT be silenced by your own fear or doubts

being gaslit into thinking i don't understand what i'm doing and need some other dude's approval before I can consider myself great has genuinely taken years of development from me so don't let anyone do that to you, truth is you'll never get that approval from them anyway so just do it for yourself

you have to kinda choose when you're gonna spend some time investigating something and when you're just gonna make art, can't get stuck troubleshooting when you're trying to express yourself

the right way to experiment with audio is to understand why an established standard sound works, then understand the properties of that sound, then correctly apply those properties to what you're doing. understand how your changes affect the underlying basic properties of the sound you're using

generally getting very sick of people not understanding art. there are no set rules. there's a natural flow from experimentation and research towards general consensus of what works and what doesn't. just cuz your findings break someone else's conventions doesn't mean it's not gonna work. lmao

reason im posting is me being sick of seeing all this nonsense advice about kicks having to be short and only in a small freq range etc. whatever. respect the few things I've talked about, and it's probably gonna bang. forget wannabe experts making rules about what a kick is allowed to be lol.

another tip I learned from a great happy hardcore DJ recently was that your kick low frequency should be close to your sub in pitch so that the impulse gels into the bass tone and doesn't contrast it too much. good idea. (1st pic not so good, 2nd pic good)

another thing with having to enhance weaker kicks is that your claps and percs end up pushing it out of the way. when you bandpass around 200 Hz, you can see inconsistent levels between kicks (whenever the clap hits it ducks. it can make a track sound less simple and less danceable

dont take any of this kick talk as gospel though, any kick can work, I'm just saying what I cared about in the design of these current drums

909 kick. the bass is basically baked into the very beginning of the kickdrum. that's about as instantaneous of a bass hit you're possibly going to get, and that's why it works so well. always preserve that as much as possible

also this is not to say that this is the ideal kick by any means lol. these are just findings from *the hypertrance labs* on what makes the kicks work in that style

big amplitude, long pitch decay and long tail. thats what a trance kick needs. you can always chop the tail or reduce the pitch in post to soften it, but adding that into a weaker sample with disperser or compressors always ruins the low impact of the kick. theres a reason the 909 kick changed music

i have a vision for what a sample pack can provide to a producer that goes beyond just "some cool sounds that always work". packs should challenge you to rethink what you think sounds good and make you explore something you're afraid of doing. music is cool. overthinking is for unsuccessful people.

lots of kickdrums just don't have very good signal to noise ratio and don't sweep from 200 to 50 at all and it's just boring. the excuse is usually that it sounds bad on big systems but people go crazy to these kicks live everytime and I value actual people over discord sound engineers

many times kicks just don't hit enough and don't have enough decay. I made sure to fix this in my samples, they really cut and punch especially in the low mids. I will also do other samples but for now this is what's missing for me and I want to make it available to everyone
