If I had tried learning how to draw 'the proper way' I probably would have given up as well. You don't need to get good before you get to draw the stuff you love, you get good because you love the stuff you draw and you don't stop.

Building your skills with any type of art is a lot of study, a lot of practice, and a lot of passion most of all. You need the motivation. It's as much learning to see as it is building coordination and muscle memory. You just do it a lot with a goal in mind. Talent is an over emphasized concept.
