Lac operon: Two gems from the early days (2|2)
by Christoph — When I recently wrote about noise in the basement of the lac operon, I stumbled across two papers in said basement, both of which I – and not only I – consider gems of early molecular biology: 'Isolation of the lac repressor' (Gilbert & Müller-Hill, 1966), and 'The nucleotide sequence of the lac operator' (Gilbert & Maxam, 1973). In part 2 now, I will dust off the lac operator story a bit to make this gem sparkle again...

What a great story from Heidi. "“We need a molecular definition of what is normal.” In the light of this work, one has to wonder if the molecular is the right place to look for that at all.

christoph: great you did identify the spaghetti as 𝘔𝘦𝘪𝘰𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘳𝘮𝘶𝘴 𝘳𝘶𝘣𝘦𝘳! the time-lapse of the feeding is a charm 👏 as a child, I always dreamed of eating single spaghetti (spaghetto!) exactly like this: slurping them up (but wasn't allowed to, *sigh).

All nations committed under the Paris Agreement to limit global warming to 1.5 degC for good reason. Instead many governments are beholden to the fossil fuel lobby and even subsidize fossil fuel use with your money. We’re now at 1.4 degC & emissions are rising not falling.

Hungary 1956 'Well over a 100k people fled the country seeking asylum. Among them was a young geneticist named George Rédei, who headed for the Austrian border with a small vial of seeds tucked in his pocket. The seeds belonged to a spindly weed in the mustard family called Arabidopsis thaliana.'

How a humble weed became a superstar of biology
Arabidopsis thaliana was always an unlikely candidate for the limelight. But 25 years ago, the diminutive thale cress launched the botanical world into the molecular era.
