The bravery of the people—and particularly the women—of Minnesota is really giving me heart this weekend. This is the state that welcomed me as a new immigrant and that has always been capable of a particular American kind of decency.

The government is saying that violence rules. That snatching foreign leaders and territories, and shooting US citizens in their cars at point blank range, is justified. That resistance is not only futile, it is dangerous. They can say these things. But they cannot force us to believe them.

I came off the DL to check out the big march in little San Leandro, California. Michelle Doppelt had already taken off her inflatable unicorn costume, but was looking forward to bringing him out again for the next protest. "We have to have fun and keep up hope," she said.

I disagree with this premise. Yes, we’re in a time of heightened political violence, and it’s important to scrutinize why. But there’s nothing “routine” about assassinations or school shootings. I’ve long reported on these and know many working to stop them. This is not a premise we should accept.

Lilly Johnson, 20, had a lot to say at her first ever protest. (The back of her sign read "Jesus Saves." Her parents used to worry that it might not be safe for her to protest, but the San Leandro, CA march felt "super energizing" and peaceful.

Retired Army officer Gerard came to the San Leandro protest with an Army flag, for his service, and a US flag, for his rule as an officer of the court. "I swore two oath to defend the Constitution, and I take that seriously."

Melissa O' Kane (a @motherjones.com subscriber!) brought her mom, Marcia, out to her very first protest. It was a huge crowd for San Leandro, CA, a town of less than 100k. "It felt great to be part of a community, to see people greeting each other and being happy to be here."

Ralph Gonzales (with his wife Pat), an Army and Air Force vet, is concerned about what's happening to vets, and about the Marine deployment in LA. "That's not the mission. It really hurts." But he and his wife Pat were glad to see "all the support for basic rights out here."

Sheila Dickinson, Stacey Walker, and José (who preferred to just use his first name) all work at the public library. "It's affecting everyone. All our families. All our storytime babies."

Emmeline, of Alameda, came out with the Philippine and US flags to stand up for her husband, who is undocumented. "He's been here since he was 6 months old, but now he has to live in fear."

Many Americans, like me, are immigrants fortunate enough to have papers and legal rights. Making our voices heard—as we all learned at our naturalization ceremonies, when we were handed a tiny flag and a voter registration card—is a way of expressing our love for the country that we chose.
