While on the surface this is about this weeks' Torah portion -it's actually about what happens when autistic people mistake unmasking for abusing others.

The Divine, too, unmasks in Lech Lecha. It learns to inhabit its own process, to reveal through intimacy rather than decree. The God of power becomes the Divine of reciprocity.

One day so many of us will be filled with shame we cannot conquer.

Being identified as autistic isn’t a revelation, usually. Part of you always knew. It’s grief. Relief. Rage. And rebuilding. You start seeing the ruins of a life built for someone who never existed - and slowly, carefully, you can start building one that fits.

Mordecai Kaplan's theology (yes, he has one) resonate with me a lot - specifically as an autistic person. His entire concept of how we interact with the Divine maps well onto the concept of unmasking. Hear me out.

It’s 11:33AM. I’ve already been physically aggressed 3 times this morning in the streets of Paris on account of my disability. It makes no difference if one’s disability is visible, invisible, or dynamically visible. The violence is out there. The disdain for our lives is palatable.
