We were honoured to host Dr. Hiroshi Maruyama, founder of Centre for Environmental and Indigenous Policy Studies & Professor Emeritus, Muroran Institute of Technology. Yesterday, Dr. Maruyama shared powerful insights on Indigenous rights, decolonization & the role of research in advancing justice.

Our researcher Tadek Markiewicz recently took part in the British International Studies Association’s 50th Anniversary Conference in Belfast. He presented on “Global Vulnerabilities and Challenges to Orders” and convened two panels: “The Many Faces of Security” and “Cultures of Representation.”

Last Thursday, our lecturer Roland Kostić served as a member of the grading committee for Anna Jeglińska’s PhD thesis “Co-nationals under construction: Poland’s diaspora policy 1989–2023.”

Our colleague, Dr. Goran Miljan, will participate in a workshop dedicated to establishing a transnational partnership network in Jewish and Holocaust studies. The event, scheduled to take place in Belgrade from 16 to 19 June 2025, is organised by the Holocaust Research Institute at Royal Holloway.

On 28 May, our colleague Michelle Gordon presented her keynote paper "Antecedents of fascist violence: contexts, transfers, and lesson learning in colonial and intra- European warfare", at the VII Convention of The International Association for Comparative Fascist Studies (Comfas) at @uab.cat.

Last Friday, our colleague Dr. Plsek presented his ongoing research on “Japanese War Criminals and Postwar Representation in Japan” at the international symposium "Transnational Wartime Memories in Asian Visual Culture: Representing Victims and Perpetrators", held at the University of Valencia.

Yesterday, a few of us attended a fascinating seminar at the Swedish Holocaust Museum, where historian Wendy Lower spoke about her book "The Ravine: A Family, a Photograph, a Holocaust Massacre Revealed." Great to connect with new and catch up with old colleagues in our field.

For yesterday's seminar we had the pleasure of hosting Tomas Sniegon, Lund University. He gave a thought-provoking talk titled "Dying in the Soviet Gulag for the Future Glory of Mother Russia? Making 'Patriotic' Sense of the Gulag in Present-Day Russia.", which was followed by a lively discussion.

A few weeks ago our colleague Dr. Markiewicz participated in the 2025 Conference "A Mnemonic Turn and the Future of Democratic Politics" organised by The Memory Studies Network of the Transregional Center for Democratic Studies (TCDS) at the New School for Social Research.

We are happy to announce the publication of the article '“Can a Christian also be a 100 per cent National Socialist?”: The Holocaust, the Wehrmacht and Religious Faith’ by our colleague Olov Simonsson in the Journal of Genocide Research.

At yesterday's department conference we had our own Kate Lonergan present her postdoctoral project titled "From Extraordinary Moments to Everyday Reconciliation". We are looking forward to the research results from this highly relevant and timely project, and to many more presentations like this.

Last week, Tomislav Dulić went to Paris to give a talk at the Centre des études ottomanes, balkaniques et centrasiatiques (@cetobac.bsky.social), which is part of @ehess.fr. He talked about "What's in the G-word? Identity, politics, and the term genocide in Bosnia, Croatia & Serbia".

Last Thursday one of our postdoctoral researchers, Ivo Plsek, had the pleasure of giving a public lecture at the Technical Lyceum Stranice in his home country, the Czech Republic. His talk "Three Stories from Lidice" explored his ongoing research on this profound and tragic chapter of history.

Big announcement! This year's Hugo Valentin Lecture will be given by Professor Alex Hinton of Rutgers University on 24 September. His lecture, titled "Perpetrators: Why do they kill?", will focus on why perpetrators commit their acts of genocidal violence. Follow us for more information!

Last Thursday, Kate Lonergan participated in the panel on women’s rights in South Asia at Lund University, which we previously announced. The discussion explored challenges and opportunities across the region, with Kate sharing insights from her research on everyday reconciliation in Sri Lanka.

Next Thursday, one of our postdoctoral researchers, Kate Lonergan, will speak about her research in Sri Lanka at the panel discussion "Women's Rights in South Asia". This Thursday, we’re kicking off our four-part Methods Seminar Series! First up: OCR and digitalisation with Tomislav Dulić. This internal seminar series will offer insights into various research methods, covering the benefits and limitations of tools for data digitalisation, storage, and analysis.

Today's seminar featured compelling VR-project drafts: Santiago López Rodríguez on Sweden & Spain's responses to Aryanization and Jewish repatriation, and Sylwia Szymańska-Smolkin on female resistance in the Bialystok Ghetto. This was followed by engaged discussion and feedback. Fingers crossed now!

Kraków, 27–29 Jan: Our Prof. Tomislav Dulić took part in an education program on genocide and human rights, organized by Deusto Law School and co-funded by the EU. Held during the 80th commemoration of Auschwitz’s liberation, the program fostered important discussions on justice and remembrance.

We’re thrilled to share that our researcher Michelle Gordon will be a keynote speaker at the 7th Convention of ComFas at UAB, Barcelona! The conference "Fascism, Radicalization, and War, 1914-50s: Occupation, Counterinsurgency, Collaborationism, Civil War" will take place on May 28th–30th 2025.

Our very own Tadek Markiewicz was selected as the new Convener of the Interpretivism in International Relations Working Group (IIR) at the ISA. The IIR seeks to foster methodological debate and innovations in the study of meanings, identities and ideas through various empirical approaches.
