A ★★★½ review of The Shining (1997)
The ‘97 adaption of the shining cannot escape the shadow of the ‘80 Kubrick film and should not have expected to. That, I fear, was its first mistake. As an adaption, this delivers. We get a pretty c...

Matt Kent's review of The Shining (The Shining, #1)
5/5: Having watched the Kubrick film before attempting the novel (and watching the overhated ‘97 miniseries partway through) it was very interesting how different the character were in the lauded adap...

The Devil Rides Out is widely recognized as among Christopher Lee’s best performances, and it’s easy to see why. He takes a rare turn as the hero, a sort of aristocratic white magician who, with his u...

Night of the Living Dead redefined the Zombie movie, and set the standard (despite its low budget) for at least three decades. The budget is low, and that shows in the scenes that take place outside t...

A ★½ review of Once Bitten (1985)
Once Bitten fails the most important assignment of a horror-comedy - it isn’t very funny. I bought this as a 2-pack with the far superior Love at First Bite (1979) and these serve as contrasts to each...

‘Son of Frankenstein’ review by Matt Kent • Letterboxd
It’s impossible not to watch this with “Young Frankenstein” in mind, but that mostly enhances the enjoyment (although you do keep expecting the characters to wink at the camera). Overall this is my fourth favorite of the Classic Universal Horrors, after Bride, The Old Dark House, and The Wolfman, and definitely ahead of the various crossovers (the best of which is Frankenstein meets the Wolfman, and the rest aren’t worth your time). Basil Rathbone (also famous for playing ‘30s-40’s Sherlock Holmes) plays the titular Baron Wulf von Frankenstein and returns to his fathers estate years after the events of Bride
