Heart wrenching decision, the DHS are an incredibly important data source. They have long been the only option available for studying change over time in individual- or family-level outcomes across Africa. My heart aches for everyone whose research, teaching, and other work depends on them.

Twins just discovered the toddler sized carts at the grocery store… one went on a joyride through the frozen aisle, while the other knocked over some flowers. Both were still given suckers at checkout, which proves that people are good at heart.

A little bit about my research: I am studying geographic disparities in health and mortality and their environmental and structural determinants. My previous research focused on state and county levels, but I am now shifting to an individual-level approach for better causal inference & explanation.

Thinking today of all the amazing people I’ve met over the past 2 decades who worked for USAID.

Michael Burawoy called me a “deviant demographer,” with his characteristic twinkle in his eye. I loved his class, it was the first time I really saw theory as a conversation, as something to build with others (those living and already passed).

NIMBY politics come home- my 6 year old’s class wrote letters to the mayor asking him not to tear down a “landmark building” to make way for 17 stories of housing, right near campus. We had a heated discussion about it this morning and she almost missed her bus.

If you had told my first year grad student self in 2007 that post tenure I would still feel nervous and self conscious about sharing a very early drafts of a new paper with a kind and helpful colleague, I wouldn’t have believed it. 🙈🙊🙉
