In the Japanese Anime Industry, Tsume Shiji (ツメ指示), or spacing charts, are used to show where the Inbetween Frames are drawn between two Key Frames! Some Terminology: 両詰め (Ryōdzume) - Both Ends Spaced 先詰め (Sakidzume) - Slow In 後詰め (Atodzume) - Slow Out 均等割 (Kintōwari) - Equally spaced Inbetweens

One thing I really appreciate in Cyberpunk Edgerunners is the animation style of holding inbetweens & key frames during Sandevistan sequences, because it allows you to study the arcs and movement in detail!

Pages 21 and 22 of the Satsuma! PDFs mainly talks about Camera Shake (paired with explosions) and also subtle hand-held movements! Since these effects are implemented in Compositing, the Layout might feel strangely incomplete, but trust in the next Department’s work!

Page 20 of the Satsuma! PDF (unofficial translation by me) explains how to use the Fairing and Rolling movements! Rolling is used for easy walking movements in Anime Productions!

Page 19 of the Satsuma! PDF features a technique called ‘Jump Tap’! This technique is a time-saving method for animating walk and run cycles in Anime Productions!

Let’s move on to page 18 of the Satsuma! PDF (unofficial translation by me)! This page details the Layer Track Up and Track Back ! Shortened to Layer T.U/T.B, this technique involves a Cel layer zooming in or out gradually, which is a great way to mimic a character walking in 3D space!

Mouth flap terms 🗣️ 口パク- regular mouth flap アゴパク- mouth flap with jaw movement 全身パク- mouth flap with entire body movement

And now for a bit of a dated term: the Gondola T.U/T.B! In page 17 of the Satsuma! PDF, we learn that terms in the Film Era of Japanese Anime persist today (which makes understanding analog techniques ever more valuable)!

Curious to know what Micchaku and Multi-Plane terms mean in relation to the Japanese Anime Industry? Page 16 of the Satsuma! PDF has that, and more! (Unofficial English translation by me!)

In page 15 of the Satsuma! PDF, we learn about the Micchaku Camera movement used to mimic 3d depth that flat 2d animation lacks!

Continuing from page 13 of the Satsuma! PDF I am unofficially translating, page 14 has notes describing caution points in a Rotating T.U/T.B! There is also info on a Follow called 'Mitchaku Multi-Plane Follow'!

Up next, page 13 of the Satsuma! PDF I’m unofficially translating explains Track Up and Track Back Camera movements! It’s similar to a Zoom In/Zoom Out movement!

Page 12 of the Satsuma! PDF, with unofficial translation by me, is all about the Gradation PAN! This PAN is used when you want to specify every movement in the PAN! Be aware of flickering while planning the movement!

Page 11 in the Satsuma! PDF I am unofficially translating is Tsuke PAN, or Follow PAN! In simple terms, think of this movement as the Cels being attached to the lens of the camera!

If you’ve been following along, I’m currently making an unofficial translation of the Satsuma! PDF, which contains film techniques used in the Japanese Anime Industry! Page 10 features the ‘Follow’ technique, which is constantly used in walking or driving scenes! ‘Follow’ me for more pages!

Moving right along to page 9 of the Satsuma! PDF I’ve been unofficially translating is the Slide movement used in Japanese Anime! From car movements to insert gags, this technique is simple but versatile!

Starting from page 8 in the Satsuma! PDF, we finally move on to Camera Work terms! The FIX and PAN movements are the most common types of Camera Work used in the Japanese Anime Industry! Read more below!

Page 7, the last part of the ‘Basics’ section of the Satsuma! PDF, explains the importance of writing clear and concise notations onto the Timesheets used in animation cuts! Practice legibility and your fellow co-workers will appreciate it!

Page 6 of the Satsuma PDF tells you all about the Layout Paper template used by companies in the Japanese Anime Industry! Interestingly, there is no one size fits all for LO paper, so make sure to use the template you’re given for your work!
