The fact that we havn't been back to the moon since 1972 really drives home the dissappintment of being Gen X. We dreamed of multicultural citys in space and personal robots. The Artemis II is more powerful and the spacecraft is better equipped, but the idealist in me has long hoped for more.

Now more than ever I’m convinced losing Anthony Bourdain meant we lost probably the biggest person on tv who advocated for the wonders of meeting new people and calling anyone online who hated learning new cultures the children they were, ruthlessly to the camera.

Unlimited money and resources and all you do is deport chinese restaurant owners, be a snowflake about genders and blow stuff up; while working to brainwash people to cheer you on. A spectacularly vapid failure of human culture and imagination.

I always try to explain this madness with sweeping grand statements in my head, despite always telling myself that trying to figure things out only leads to more anger. Real truth only exists in the space between ideas; in intouchable ephemeral sparks; or more plainly, in art.

As a theatre artist I am only truly happy working in real life, face to face with other people. The Internet seems to suck empathy out of the human soul.

A dog to hug, a cool breeze in the shade, a waterside to visit, warm food, a cozy cafe, a sketchbook, theatre rehearsal...the rest seems like madness.

If you're arguing with people agreeing with you.. maybe you should redirect that rage towards the current administration instead.

Reminder: Black history is American history.

Theatre isn't just entertainment. It can be a force for the community, for social change. It is ancient and primal. It's counterculture. It conjures gods and demons in the flesh and bends reality; subversive and dangerous. It's a safety net for the vulnerable. Seeing plays makes the world better.

I wish getting stronger was as easy as a Shonen montage.

I get to start rehearsals on the play I am directing tonight! Despite everything I am so lucky and grateful and get to work on something special.

Listened to the song The Last Amethyst Deceiver by the band Coil while driving home at night in a snowstorm. It was the first time I had ever heard the song. It was..a moment.

Sometimes it gives me peace to remember all the great art that emerged during times of struggle. Even during the so-called dark ages incredible painting and writing thrived, including many of the fairytales we still tell today. Art is helpful solace.

Meditate today. Even if only for five minutes. Be kind to yourself, then connect with your community.

The more I "analog" my life the happier I am. Live music and theatre, physical books, boardgames, vinyl records...they resonate with a warm energy. I still enjoy the odd Anime, Film, and videogame..but they don't have the same luster they once did.

Make no mistake: creating in the face of hate and despair is an act of defiance.

Prioritize safe spaces for yourself. They can be super tiny. You can never have too many of them.

Not everyone can handle engaging due to mental health. It doesn't mean they don't care about what is going on. It might even be harder on them than you realize.

"The state of things" is important; but life itself is about so much more. Refusing to talk about the good things in life will only leave us with the sense that things can *never* get better. We need faith in the future if we're ever going to change "the state of things".

How much do people really listen to one another, do ya think? If my 20 year old self knew how much yoga I was doing he would be mad. Thinking of getting an ear pierced. Directing 101, don't mess too much with a good thing. A sketchbook + warm tea kicks ass.

It's so cold outside. I haven't been sleeping well at all. Dealing with the state of things is hard. It's tough not to let some thoughts out. It's a struggle not to be negative. I feel like I am pressuring myself to be a harder, sharper, wiser artist and person. It's the only thing I can control.

Evil is obvious. Evil is boring. Americans and the media give it the wrong sort of attention that only makes it stronger. Even the villains in modern stories are too cool. These are Scooby Doo villains. They are lame as hell and social media depictions should reflect that.
